Random Action Generator

The Random Action Generator hands you a short sentence describing something a person did: "You went ziplining.", "I started a podcast.", "You participated in a flash mob." Each press pulls between one and ten of these from a fixed list of 200. It is a small, blunt tool, and that is the point: it gives writers a concrete event to build a scene around, and it gives anyone stuck for something to do a suggestion they didn't pick themselves.

How it works

There is one setting: the number of actions, from 1 to 10. The generator shuffles the whole list and returns the first N entries, so you never get the same action twice within a single result. Press again for a fresh shuffle. There are no categories, filters or difficulty levels, and nothing is saved between visits.

What the actions look like

Every entry is a complete past-tense sentence. Half of them are written in second person ("You choreographed a dance.") and half in first person ("I sculpted a figure from clay."), which is handy if you are alternating between a narrator and a character. The list leans toward everyday, doable activities rather than dramatic plot events: crafts and hobbies (candle-making, pottery, jewelry), outdoor things (bird watching, fruit picking, roller-skating), social plans (a themed dinner party, a neighborhood picnic, a scavenger hunt), and a handful of one-offs like swimming with dolphins or dancing through the streets in the rain. Nothing in the list is violent, adult or unsafe, so it is fine to use with kids and in classrooms.

Ways to use a random action

Turning an action into a story

A single action is a cause without an effect, which is exactly what a stalled draft needs. The quickest way to expand one is to ask three questions: why did the character do it, what went wrong, and who saw. "I started a community garden" becomes a story the moment the neighbor who hates the garden shows up.
