Random Movie Generator
Set genre, year range, minimum IMDb rating and streaming service, and get one random movie with poster, synopsis, trailer and where to watch it.The Random Movie Generator picks one film that matches your filters and shows you enough to decide in thirty seconds: poster, release year, IMDb rating and vote count, genres, a short synopsis, the trailer and the streaming services that carry it. You can narrow by genre, by release year, by a minimum IMDb rating and by which services you subscribe to, so the answer to "what should we watch" is something you can actually play tonight rather than a title you'd have to rent.
The filters
- Streaming provider – pick any combination of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Crunchyroll, fuboTV, Tubi TV and Vudu. Leave it empty for all services.
- Genre – choose one or more of 19: action, animation, comedy, crime, documentary, drama, family, fantasy, history, horror, music, romance, sci-fi, sport, thriller, war, western, European and reality. Empty means any genre.
- Year range – a two-handle slider from 1900 to 2025. Drag the left handle up to skip black-and-white classics, or box in a single decade.
- Minimum rating – an IMDb score from 1 to 10 in steps of 0.1. It starts at 5.0, which already trims the bottom of the barrel; 7.0 is a sensible "only good films" setting and 8.0 leaves mostly acknowledged classics.
The filters combine, and the tool fetches matching films from the site's own movie database when you press Generate Movie. If nothing matches, you get a message asking you to loosen a filter rather than a bad fallback pick. A rating of 8.5 with Western and Peacock selected, for example, will usually come up empty.
What the result shows
One movie at a time, with its title and year, poster and backdrop, the IMDb rating alongside the number of votes (so a 7.8 from 400 people and a 7.8 from 400K people don't look the same), the genre list, a one-paragraph synopsis and an embedded YouTube trailer. Below that are the provider logos, each linking straight to the film on that service and marked as included with the subscription, rentable or purchasable. Under the main card is a row of other films that matched the same filters; click any of them to swap it into the main view without generating again. Streaming catalogs change constantly, so treat the provider links as "was available when we last checked" and confirm on the service.
Ways people use it
- Movie night with a veto rule. Set your services and a 6.5 minimum, generate, and allow each person one veto. The row of alternates under the card usually settles it without a second press.
- Working through a decade. Drag the year slider to 1970–1979, set the rating to 7.5, and let it surface films you know by name but have never seen.
- Genre nights. Horror in October, documentaries on a weeknight, animation with kids. Tick the genre and the service and go.
- Finding what's actually on your subscription. Select only the services you pay for. It's a faster way to browse Tubi or Peacock than their own home screens.
Narrower pickers on this site
If you already know the lane, a specialized tool skips the filter setup. The Random Netflix Movie Generator and Random Disney Movie Generator are pinned to one catalog; the Random Horror Movie Generator and Comedy Movie Generator are pinned to one genre; and the Date Night Movie Generator leans toward romance and crowd-pleasers. For a quote to open the evening with, there's the Random Movie Quote Generator, and the rest are under all movie, TV and music generators.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the random movie generator only show movies I can stream?
Only if you select streaming providers. With none selected it draws from the whole database and shows whichever services carry the film, if any. Select the services you subscribe to and every result will be available on at least one of them.
- Why did I get a message saying no movies were found?
Your filters combined too tightly, most often a high minimum rating with a narrow genre, a short year range and a single service. Lower the rating or remove one filter and generate again.
- Where do the ratings and availability come from?
Ratings and vote counts are IMDb figures stored in the site's movie database, and the provider links are deep links to the film on each service. Availability changes frequently, so confirm on the service before settling in.
- Can I get more than one movie at a time?
The main card shows one movie, but the row underneath lists other films that matched the same filters. Click any of them to view its details, or press Generate Movie again for a fresh draw.
- Is this a movie randomizer for TV shows as well?
No, films only. The database behind this page holds movies; series are not included.
