Truth or Dare Generator

Pick a category and press Truth, Dare or Truth or Dare to get one random prompt from 438 questions and dares.

The Truth or Dare Generator gives you one prompt at a time from a list of 438: 217 truth questions and 221 dares, split across Party, Hot, Funny and Friendly categories. Pick a category, press Truth, Dare or the Truth or Dare button that decides for you, and the prompt appears in a box under the buttons. It replaces the deck of cards or the app that everyone has to install.

How to use it

Choose one of five options at the top: Random (all four categories), Party, Hot, Funny or Friendly. Then press one of the three buttons. Truth pulls only from the truth questions in that category, Dare only from the dares, and Truth or Dare flips a coin first and then draws. The output box shows either "Truth" or "Dare" as a heading and the prompt beneath it. One prompt per press, no history, no skipping list, so if the group vetoes one you just press again.

What's in each category

CategoryPromptsToneExample truthExample dare
Friendly119Safe for family and coworkersWhat is your favorite childhood memory?Do a plank for a minute
Funny93Silly, physical, embarrassing but harmlessWhat's the most unusual fear you have?Peel a banana using just your toes
Party140Secrets and crush questions, mild daresHave you ever had a crush on someone your friend has dated?Talk to a pillow as if it's your crush
Hot86Explicitly sexual. Adults onlyWhat's your biggest turn off?(dares in this category are for couples and adult groups)

Two things to know before you play with a mixed group. First, Random really does mean all four categories, so the Hot questions can come up; if there are teenagers or relatives at the table, select Friendly, Funny or Party explicitly. Second, there is no "extreme" setting. Hot is the most intense level here, and it's intense in the sexual sense rather than the dangerous-dare sense. None of the 221 dares involve alcohol, strangers or anything physically risky.

Ways people use it

  • House parties and sleepovers. Put the page on a phone, pass it around, and let each player press for the person on their left.
  • Couples' nights. Set Hot and alternate Truth and Dare. If you want questions rather than dares, the Question Generator for Couples is a calmer version of the same idea.
  • Classroom and youth-group icebreakers. Friendly on its own is clean enough for a school setting; Funny adds physical dares that get a room laughing.
  • Video calls. Truths work over a call when dares don't. Set the category, press Truth, and read it aloud.
  • Mixing games. When truth or dare runs its course, switch to the Never Have I Ever Generator or the Would You Rather Generator, which draw from the same kind of prompt lists.

For a few standard rules that make the game run better: everyone gets one pass per game, dares have a 60-second limit unless the prompt says otherwise, and anyone who refuses both drinks water, does ten push-ups or takes a forfeit the group agreed on beforehand. Charades makes a good forfeit; the Random Charades Generator can supply the word. This tool lives with the rest of our fun, party & decision tools.

Frequently asked questions

How many truth or dare questions are there?

438 in total: 217 truths and 221 dares. By category: Party 140, Friendly 119, Funny 93 and Hot 86.

Is there a clean or kid-friendly mode?

Yes. Select Friendly (or Funny) before pressing a button. Avoid Random, because it includes the Hot category, which contains sexual questions.

Is there an extreme or 18+ setting?

Hot is the adult category and it is explicitly sexual. There is no separate 'extreme' dare list; none of the dares involve alcohol or physical risk.

Can I generate only dares?

Yes. Pick a category and press the Dare button. It draws only from the dares in that category. Truth does the same for questions.

Can I play truth or dare online with this over a video call?

Yes. Share your screen or read the prompt aloud. Truth questions work best remotely; most dares assume the players are in the same room.
