Blank Slate Word Generator
One click, one word from a 270-word list. Use it as the fixed half of a Blank Slate cue and let players fill in the blank. The Blank Slate Word Generator gives you one word per click from a list of 270 single words, most of them adjectives such as "fresh", "hidden", "dormant" or "uncharted". Use the word as the fixed half of a Blank Slate cue and let every player fill in the other half. It is meant for people who own the game and have run through the deck, or who want to play a Blank Slate-style round with nothing but pens, paper and a phone.
How to turn one word into a Blank Slate cue
An official Blank Slate card is a two-word phrase with one word missing, like "HOT ___" or "___ BALL". This generator does not print the blank for you; it gives you the anchor word. The person running the round announces where the blank goes ("the word is 'fresh', blank comes after") and everyone writes a word that completes the phrase. "Fresh air", "fresh start" and "fresh bread" are all fair answers, and the scoring works exactly as it does with the boxed game: match exactly one other player for three points, match two or more for one point each, match nobody for zero.
Because the list leans toward abstract adjectives, cues come out harder than the retail deck. "Latent" or "amorphous" will split a table more than "birthday" ever did. If your group prefers concrete nouns, draw from the Random Noun Generator instead and use the same rule; for a gentler mix of describing words, the Random Adjective Generator covers everyday vocabulary rather than synonyms for "blank".
What is in the word list
The 270 words were assembled around the game's name: synonyms and near-synonyms of "blank slate" (empty, bare, unmarked, void, tabula rasa), words for things not yet formed (nascent, embryonic, budding, unwritten), and words for things obscured (hidden, veiled, cryptic, penumbral). A few are nouns (canvas, draft, foundation, parchment, cipher) and a couple are stretches (zephyr, xenon). There are no proper nouns, no profanity and nothing longer than two words, so the list is safe for a classroom. The draw is uniform: every word has the same chance each click and the tool keeps no history, so repeats happen roughly once every 270 presses on average.
Playing Blank Slate without the box
The retail game supports three to eight players and ships with 250 double-sided cue cards and dry-erase boards. To play a round with this generator instead:
- Each player needs something to write on and a way to hide their answer until the reveal.
- One player presses Generate and reads the word aloud, then says whether the blank comes before or after it. Alternate each round so the two positions get equal time.
- Everyone writes a single word to complete the phrase. Compound words and proper nouns count if the table agrees beforehand.
- Reveal together, score, and play to 25 points or to a fixed number of rounds.
Twelve to fifteen rounds is enough for a game; at one generated word per round, that is far fewer than the 270 available, so you will not exhaust the list in an evening.
Sample cues built from generated words
These are examples of how a generated word turns into a playable cue, with a few answers that would plausibly match at a normal table.
| Generated word | Cue as read aloud | Likely matches |
|---|---|---|
| fresh | fresh ___ | air, start, bread |
| open | ___ open | wide, cracked, half |
| ground | ___ ground | common, high, play |
| silent | silent ___ | night, treatment, film |
| white | white ___ | noise, lie, board |
| hidden | hidden ___ | gem, cost, talent |
| wax | ___ wax | candle, ear, car |
| prime | prime ___ | time, number, minister |
Other word tools on the site fit different party games: the Random Letter Generator works for Scattergories-style rounds, and the Random Word Generator pulls from a general English list rather than this themed one. You can browse all word & language generators for more.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this generate real Blank Slate cards with the blank included?
No. It generates one anchor word at a time from a list of 270; you decide whether the blank goes before or after it. The game rules and scoring otherwise work the same way.
- How many words are in the Blank Slate word list?
270 unique entries. They are mostly adjectives related to the idea of a blank slate: empty, new, hidden or not yet formed. There are no names or offensive words.
- Can I play Blank Slate online with this?
The generator handles the cards; it does not host a multiplayer game. Share the screen on a video call, have one person read each word, and players type or hold up answers for the reveal.
- Why are some of the words so unusual?
The list was built around synonyms for 'blank slate' rather than common household words, so it includes terms like 'inchoate' and 'liminal'. They make for harder cues. Skip any word the table does not know and press again.
