Random Noun Generator

Get 1 to 20 random English nouns from a list of 4,519, optionally limited to an exact length or a starting and ending letter.

The Random Noun Generator picks 1 to 20 nouns at random from a list of 4,519 common English nouns, and lets you narrow the draw by exact word length, first letter and last letter. It's the tool to reach for when you need a concrete word fast: a subject for a drawing, a target for a word game, a seed for a story, or a vocabulary drill where the word has to start with "s" and be seven letters long.

The four settings

  • Number of nouns: 1 to 20 per click. Anything outside that range shows an error instead of results.
  • Noun length: the exact number of letters. This box starts at 5, so the first click gives you five-letter nouns only; clear the box to allow any length. Lengths of 1 to 20 are accepted, though the longest nouns in the list are 19 letters and most fall between 4 and 9.
  • Start letter and end letter: pick any letter a–z, or leave both on Any. Filters stack, so "starts with b, ends with e, 5 letters" is a valid request.

Because the list is finite, tight filters can return fewer nouns than you asked for. Ask for 20 nine-letter nouns that start with "q" and you'll get the handful that exist, and the heading above the results tells you how many that was. If nothing matches, the page says so rather than padding the results with near-misses.

What kind of nouns are in the list

The 4,519 entries are ordinary, lowercase common nouns from a general English word list: person, group, location, time, eye, life, form, head at the frequent end, and things like backbend, leapfrog, parliament, festival and rodeo further down. There are no proper nouns (no capitalized names or places), no multi-word entries and no plurals added artificially, though a few words that are plural by nature, such as people or marbles, appear as they would in a dictionary. It is a dictionary-style list, not a curated children's list, so if you're building something for a classroom, glance over the batch before you hand it out. The length spread is wide: 185 three-letter nouns, 668 six-letter nouns, 120 twelve-letter nouns, and a single nineteen-letter one.

Each result appears on its own card. There's no definition or part-of-speech tag on the card because every word here is already a noun; the same word list also powers the Random Adjective Generator and the mixed Random Word Generator, which draws from nouns, adjectives and verbs together.

Things people do with a batch of random nouns

  • Pictionary, charades and drawing games. Set the length to 5 or 6 for words that are concrete enough to draw and short enough to guess.
  • Story and poetry prompts. Three random nouns that must all appear in a paragraph is a standard warm-up in writing workshops. Pair it with the Random Word Generator for Songs if you're writing lyrics and want words with more mood.
  • Spelling and vocabulary practice. Fix the starting letter to the one a student is working on and pull ten words. For rhyme drills, the Rhyming Words Generator is the better fit.
  • Naming placeholders. Two random nouns make a decent code name for a project (heron-lantern, marble-orbit), and the Acronym Generator can turn a phrase built from them into a short label.
  • Blank Slate and word-association games. The site has a dedicated Blank Slate Word Generator, but a plain noun works for most association rounds.

Noun types you'll see in the results

The generator doesn't tag results by type, but it helps to know what turns up, especially if you're using the words for grammar practice.

TypeWhat it isExamples from the list
ConcreteA thing you can see or touch.eye, head, cartwheel, marbles
AbstractAn idea, state or quality.life, youth, time, way
CollectiveA group treated as one unit.group, people, parliament
Event or activitySomething that happens or is done.festival, rodeo, wrestling, showing
CompoundTwo words fused into one noun.backbend, headstand, leapfrog

Proper nouns are the one category you won't get, since the list is all lowercase common words. For made-up words that only look like nouns, the Fake Word Generator does that instead. More tools of this kind are under all word & language generators.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I only get five-letter nouns?

The Noun Length box defaults to 5. Delete the number to get nouns of any length, or type the exact length you want.

Why did I get fewer nouns than I asked for?

The filters are applied to a fixed list of 4,519 nouns, so a narrow combination (a rare starting letter plus a long length) may have fewer matches than the number you requested. The results heading shows the actual count.

Can it generate proper nouns or plural nouns?

No. The list contains lowercase common nouns in their dictionary form. Words that are naturally plural, like people or marbles, are included, but the tool does not pluralize anything.

Does the random noun generator show definitions?

No. Each card shows the word only. If you need a meaning, look it up in a dictionary; the words are standard English so they will all be found.
