Likes and Dislikes Generator

One press gives you a character card with five random likes and five random dislikes drawn from a pool of about 600 things.

The Likes and Dislikes Generator gives you a character profile card with five likes and five dislikes, pulled from a pool of about 600 specific things: blood moons, humid weather, vinyl records, stand-up comedy, jumping in puddles, throwing knives. One press, ten traits, no setup.

How it works

There is nothing to configure. Press Generate and the tool shuffles the whole list, takes the first ten entries, and labels the first five Likes and the next five Dislikes. That means likes and dislikes come from the same pool, and any item can land on either side. "Foggy weather" is a like for one character and a dislike for the next. That's intentional: what a person hates says as much about them as what they love, and it's the unexpected placement that makes a character feel specific.

Because the picks are random, the ten items won't form a coherent personality on their own. The useful move is to keep the three or four that suggest a person and discard the rest, then press again for a fresh batch to fill the gaps.

What's in the list

The entries are concrete nouns and short phrases rather than abstract adjectives, which is what makes them usable in a bio. Roughly, the pool covers:

  • Sky and weather – full moons, lunar eclipses, meteor showers, hail, thunderstorms, hot and damp weather, cold and dry weather, light snow.
  • Colors and nature – each color of the spectrum, flowers, roses, seashells, the northern lights.
  • Collections and objects – vinyl records, tea sets, dominoes, yo-yos, keeping old tickets and bookmarks, collecting gnomes, knick-knacks.
  • Social situations and sensations – parades, festivals, social events, sudden movements, laying on the floor, blanket forts, massages, and a handful of physical-affection entries such as touching hair or being touched on the stomach.
  • Hobbies and activities – bird watching, cave exploring, racing cars, hunting, gymnastics, writing codes and ciphers.
  • Archetypes and ideas – pirates, astronauts, cowboys, mermaids, heroes, eldritch monsters, danger, new things.

A few entries are mildly intimate (the touch-related ones), so if you're generating for a children's character, glance at the results before you paste them.

Ways people use it

  • OC profiles and reference sheets. The likes/dislikes block is a standard part of an original-character template, and a random draw stops every OC from liking "music" and disliking "rude people".
  • Novel and screenplay characters. A protagonist who dislikes crescent moons and likes cold, wet weather has a texture that a trait list of "brave, loyal" never gives you.
  • Tabletop NPCs. A game master can generate a card for a shopkeeper in ten seconds and use the dislikes as roleplay hooks. Combine with the Random Job Generator for the NPC's trade and the Random Emotion Generator for their mood when the party walks in.
  • Icebreakers. Generate a card, then have each person say which item they'd swap to the other column.
  • Full character builds. For a complete sheet, add appearance details from the Random Hair Color Generator, Random Eye Color Generator and Random Height Generator, or give a superhero character an ability from the Random Superpower Generator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate only dislikes?

Not directly. Every press produces five likes and five dislikes from the same pool. If you only need dislikes, take the bottom half of the card, or press again and treat both columns as dislikes, since any item can sit on either side.

How many likes and dislikes are in the generator?

About 600 individual entries. Each press shows ten of them, so you can press many times before results start to feel familiar.

Will the likes and dislikes match each other or the same character type?

No. Picks are random and independent, so a card might list both 'hot temperatures' and 'cold temperatures' as likes. Keep the entries that fit and re-roll for the rest.

Can I copy the results?

The card is plain text, so select and copy it from the page. There is no dedicated copy or export button on this tool.

Are the entries suitable for a kid-friendly character?

Mostly. The list has no profanity, but it includes a few entries about physical touch, so check the card before using it for a children's character.
