Press Generate Football Player and you get one player card: a photo and a name, drawn from a list of 46 of the most famous footballers of the last few decades. "Football" here means association football, or soccer. The list runs from Pelé and Zidane through Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar to Mbappé and Salah, so it's built for pub quizzes, "who's better" debates and drawing or FIFA challenges rather than for scouting.
How it works
There are no settings. Each press shuffles the list and shows one player, and the page won't show the same player twice in a row. That's the only guard against repeats, so over a run of ten presses you may see someone again. If you want a stream of different players, it's quicker to keep clicking than to hope for a dropdown, because there isn't one.
What the card shows
A 300 by 300 photo and the player's name. The underlying dataset also stores nationality, height, date and place of birth and an estimated net worth, but the card on this page doesn't display those fields. Who is in the list
The 46 players lean toward the 2000s and 2010s, with a heavy Premier League and Champions League presence. By nationality the biggest groups are Brazil (Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Neymar, Dani Alves, Robinho, Hulk, Oscar), Spain (Iniesta, Raúl, Torres, Piqué, Ramos, De Gea), England (Beckham, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Ferdinand), France (Zidane, Henry, Pogba, Griezmann, Ribéry) and Germany (Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Özil). The rest are single representatives of their countries: Messi and Agüero for Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal, Ibrahimović for Sweden, Bale and Giggs for Wales, Salah for Egypt, Drogba and Yaya Touré for Ivory Coast, Eto'o for Cameroon, Lewandowski for Poland, Robben for the Netherlands, Hazard for Belgium, Suárez for Uruguay, Falcao for Colombia, Balotelli for Italy.
A few things the list is not: it's not current-season rosters, it has no women's players, and it has no goalkeepers apart from De Gea.
Ways people use it
- Career-path quizzes. Generate a player and have everyone name his clubs in order. Ribéry, Falcao and Robinho are the ones that catch people out.
- Drawing and sketching practice. A random face to draw from the photo, with the name hidden until the reveal.
- Fantasy or "build a squad" games. Press eleven times, keep what you get, and argue about the formation. The Random Sport Generator can decide which sport's version you play first.
