Random NHL Team Generator

The Random NHL Team Generator picks one hockey team at random from the 32 NHL franchises, or up to ten different ones in a single click. Each result is a card with the team name and logo. It's the quickest way to settle "give me a random NHL team" for a video game match, a fantasy draft order or a bet with a friend.

How it works

Enter a number from 1 to 10 and press Generate NHL Team. The tool shuffles the full list and returns the first N teams, so a batch never contains the same team twice. Ask for 10 and you get 10 distinct clubs; ask for 1 and you get a single team to work with. There is no conference, division or country filter.

What's in the list

All 32 franchises, with the logo for each: the seven Canadian clubs (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets) and the 25 US-based teams, from Original Six members like the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers through to the newest expansion sides, the Vegas Golden Knights (2017) and Seattle Kraken (2021).

One caveat: the list still carries the Arizona Coyotes name and logo for the franchise that moved to Salt Lake City in 2024 and now plays as the Utah Mammoth. If you draw that card, read it as Utah.

Ways people use it

• NHL video game matchups. Generate two teams and play them, or generate one and force yourself to use a club you would never pick.
• Fantasy and pool draft order. Generate 10 teams, assign each to a participant, and use the order as the draft order.
• Franchise mode challenges. Let the randomizer decide which team you rebuild over a full season.
• Trivia and quizzes. Show a logo card and ask for the city, the division or a current captain.
• Picking a team to follow. New to hockey and don't have a hometown club? Generate one and stick with it for a season.

How the league is organized

The NHL runs two conferences of 16 teams, each split into two divisions of eight. The Eastern Conference has the Atlantic (Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto) and Metropolitan (Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington). The Western Conference has the Central (Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Utah, Winnipeg) and Pacific (Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Vancouver, Vegas). Sixteen teams make the Stanley Cup playoffs each spring: the top three in each division plus two wild cards per conference.

Because the generator ignores this structure, a batch of two can easily give you two Atlantic teams. If you need a cross-conference matchup, generate a few and pick.
