Random Pokémon Generator
Get 1 to 8 random Pokémon with artwork and types, filtered by type, generation, legendary status or evolution stage. The Random Pokémon Generator picks between one and eight Pokémon at random from the full National Pokédex as it stood at the end of Generation 9's base games: 1,008 Pokémon, from #001 Bulbasaur to #1008 Miraidon. Each result shows the official artwork, the name and the type or types. You can narrow the draw by type, by generation, and by whether you want legendaries or Pokémon that can still evolve, which makes it useful for Nuzlocke starters, random team challenges and "guess the Pokémon" games.
The filters
- Number – 1 to 8 per press. The default is 4.
- Type – any of the 18 types, or Random for all. A dual-type Pokémon matches either of its types, so "Flying" returns Charizard as well as Pidgeot.
- Generation – Random, or one of Generations 1 to 9. Each option is a slice of the Pokédex by number, listed in the table below.
- Legendary – a checkbox. Unticked, you only get non-legendary Pokémon; ticked, you only get the 96 flagged as legendary. It's a switch between the two groups, not a way to add legendaries to the mix.
- Not fully evolved – works the same way. Unticked, results are fully evolved Pokémon only; ticked, you only get the 321 Pokémon that still have an evolution ahead of them, which is what you want for starters or a "raise it yourself" challenge.
Filters combine, and the tool draws only from Pokémon that pass all of them. When fewer Pokémon match than you asked for, you get however many exist: ask for 8 Generation 1 Ice-types with Legendary ticked and you get Articuno alone. Some combinations have no members at all, such as legendary Bug-types in Generation 2, and the tool then shows nothing rather than relaxing your filters.
What each card shows
Artwork, name and types, nothing more. The underlying data also holds each Pokémon's Pokédex category, height, weight, ability, weaknesses and a six-stat spread, but this tool keeps the card minimal so eight fit on screen. If you want a full six-Pokémon team drawn with team-building rules, the Random Pokémon Team Generator is built for that. For a type on its own (say, to pick a mono-type run), use the Random Pokémon Type Generator, and for mashed-up sprites there's the Pokémon Infinite Fusion Generator.
Generations and Pokédex ranges
The generation filter uses National Pokédex number ranges, which is how the games themselves define a generation. This is the exact split the tool uses:
| Generation | Region | Games | Pokédex numbers | Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kanto | Red, Blue, Yellow | 001–151 | 151 |
| 2 | Johto | Gold, Silver, Crystal | 152–251 | 100 |
| 3 | Hoenn | Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald | 252–386 | 135 |
| 4 | Sinnoh | Diamond, Pearl, Platinum | 387–493 | 107 |
| 5 | Unova | Black, White, Black 2, White 2 | 494–649 | 156 |
| 6 | Kalos | X, Y | 650–721 | 72 |
| 7 | Alola | Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon | 722–809 | 88 |
| 8 | Galar, Hisui | Sword, Shield, Legends: Arceus | 810–905 | 96 |
| 9 | Paldea | Scarlet, Violet | 906–1008 | 103 |
The list stops at #1008, so the Pokémon added in the Scarlet and Violet DLC (Dipplin, Ogerpon, Pecharunt and the rest of #1009 to #1025) aren't included, and neither are regional forms or Mega Evolutions, which share a number with their base Pokémon. Water is the most common type in the set with 153 Pokémon; Ice is the rarest with 48.
Ways people use it
- Random starter or randomizer runs. Tick "Not fully evolved", pick your generation, ask for 1, and that's your starter. Some players draw a new one per gym.
- Team challenges. Draw 6 (or 8 and cut two) and build a team from whatever comes up; add a type filter for a mono-type challenge.
- Who's that Pokémon. Generate one, cover the name, and have the other person guess from the artwork. A generation filter keeps it fair for players who only know the older games.
- Drawing and art prompts. Artists use a random draw with a type filter as a daily prompt, which is why the card keeps the official artwork large.
Beyond Pokémon, the Random Yu-Gi-Oh Cards tool does the same job for that game, and there are more character pickers under all game and anime generators.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Pokémon does the random Pokémon generator include?
1,008, covering the complete National Pokédex from Bulbasaur (#001) through Miraidon (#1008). That is every Pokémon from Generations 1 to 9 as of the base Scarlet and Violet games; the DLC additions from #1009 onward, regional forms and Mega Evolutions are not included.
- Why did I get fewer Pokémon than I asked for?
Your filters left fewer matches than the number you requested, so the tool returned all of them. Legendary Pokémon in a single generation and type, for example, are often just one or two. Loosen a filter or set the generation to Random.
- Why do I never get legendaries unless I tick the box?
The Legendary checkbox switches between two pools rather than adding to one. Unticked, it draws only non-legendary Pokémon; ticked, it draws only legendaries. The same is true of the Not Fully Evolved box, which chooses between fully evolved Pokémon and those that can still evolve.
- Can I generate a full random Pokémon team?
You can ask this tool for 6 and treat them as a team, but it applies no team rules. The Random Pokémon Team Generator is built specifically for six-Pokémon teams.
- Is there a random Pokémon wheel?
Not as a spinning wheel. This page uses a button and a set of filters, which lets you narrow by type and generation in a way a wheel cannot. Set the number to 1 for a single spin-style result.
