3 Letter Word Generator

Get 1 to 10 random three-letter English words, with optional filters for the first letter, the last letter and how many vowels the word contains.

The 3 Letter Word Generator returns one to ten random three-letter English words per press, each shown on its own card. You can leave the filters alone and get a plain random draw, or narrow it by first letter, last letter and the number of vowels the word contains. The pool is just under 300 common words, things like cup, axe, jet, net and vie, taken from a general vocabulary list rather than a Scrabble dictionary, so you won't see obscure entries such as "qat" or "zax".

The filters

  • Number of words: 1 to 10 per press. If your filters match fewer words than you asked for, you get all the matches; the heading above the results tells you how many.
  • Start letter and end letter: two dropdowns with Any plus a to z. Choose "c" and "t" and you'll get cat, cot, cut and so on.
  • Number of vowels: optional. Enter 1 for words like dog and pen, 2 for words like sea and oat. The tool counts a, e, i, o and u only, so "gym" and "shy" count as having zero vowels and can't be requested with this box (the minimum it accepts is 1); leave it blank and they'll turn up in ordinary draws.

The filters combine, and a very tight combination can match nothing. Words starting with "q" and ending in "z", for instance, returns "No words generated based on your filters". Loosen one filter and try again.

What three-letter words are good for

  • Word games and warm-ups. Draw five words and use them as a Boggle-style seed, a Scrabble rack exercise or the answers for a homemade word search.
  • Early readers. Three-letter words are the backbone of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) phonics practice. Set the vowel count to 1 and generate ten words for a reading drill.
  • Short names and handles. If you need a three-letter username, brand, variable name or a name for a pet, ten random real words is a faster starting point than a blank page. For handles specifically, pair it with the Pls Donate Text Generator if you're styling text for Roblox.
  • Writing constraints. Poets and teachers use random short words as prompts: write a line that includes all five, or a paragraph using only three-letter words.

About the word list

The words come from a 12,000-entry English vocabulary list tagged by part of speech (nouns, verbs and adjectives), and the generator keeps only the three-letter entries, which leaves 297 distinct words. A few words appear in the list under more than one part of speech (man is a noun and a verb, for example), so on rare occasions the same word can appear twice in one batch. All of the words are ordinary dictionary words with no abbreviations, proper nouns or slang, which is why the list is a few hundred long rather than the thousand-plus you'd find in a tournament word list.

Other lengths

The same tool exists for longer words: the 4 Letter Word Generator, 5 Letter Word Generator (the Wordle length) and 6 Letter Word Generator share the filters on this page. For a different language, try the Japanese Word Generator. You can browse all word & language generators for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How many three-letter words are in the generator?

297 distinct words. They are common English nouns, verbs and adjectives rather than a full Scrabble list, so unusual words like qat, zax or cwm are not included.

Can I get words that start and end with specific letters?

Yes. Use the start-letter and end-letter dropdowns, which each offer Any plus a to z. The two filters combine.

Does the vowel filter count y?

No. Only a, e, i, o and u are counted, so a word like gym has zero vowels by the tool's count. Leave the vowel box blank to include such words.

Are these valid Scrabble words?

They are all ordinary dictionary words, so almost all are valid in Scrabble and similar games, but the list is not the official tournament list and does not include every legal three-letter word.
