5 Letter Word Generator

Get one to ten random five-letter English words, optionally fixed to a first letter, last letter or vowel count.

The 5 Letter Word Generator returns one to ten random five-letter English words per click. They come from a dictionary list of 12,728 common words, of which 1,715 are exactly five letters long: 633 nouns, 684 verbs and 398 adjectives. You can pin the first letter, the last letter, or the number of vowels, which makes it useful for word games, spelling practice and picking a short name for something.

Filters you can set

  • Number of words – 1 to 10 per press.
  • Start letter – Any, or a single letter a–z. Choosing “s” restricts results to words like shape, stand, sweet.
  • End letter – Any, or a–z. Pair it with the start letter to narrow the list quickly; s-to-e gives shape, stone, smile, serve.
  • Number of vowels – optional. The counter treats a, e, i, o and u as vowels (y is not counted). Every five-letter word in the list has 1, 2 or 3 vowels (562, 1,012 and 141 words respectively), so entering 4 or 5 returns nothing.

If a combination of filters matches fewer words than you asked for, you get however many exist; if it matches none, the page says so instead of showing a blank card. Each word appears on its own card in lowercase, exactly as it is stored.

What kind of words are in the list

The list is built from frequency-ranked everyday vocabulary, not a Scrabble dictionary. Expect words like group, youth, place, water, voice, field, night and house, plus verbs (build, carry, teach) and adjectives (other, small, great, young, major). A handful of entries are capitalized proper nouns that made the frequency cut, such as Earth, Paris, Texas and April; because the start-letter filter is lowercase, those only show up when the start letter is set to Any. There are no obscure Wordle-only words like “xylyl” or “zymic”, which is either a plus or a minus depending on why you are here.

Where five-letter words come in handy

  • Wordle-style practice. Set a start letter you have already confirmed and a vowel count, then use the results as candidate guesses. Because the list only holds common words, the suggestions are the kind that tend to be answers rather than exotic filler.
  • Spelling and vocabulary drills. Teachers generate ten words, students spell them aloud or sort them into nouns, verbs and adjectives.
  • Passwords and passphrases. Three or four random five-letter words joined with hyphens make a memorable passphrase, though for anything sensitive use a dedicated password manager.
  • Short names and handles. A five-letter word is short enough for a username, a project codename or a brand you can still type. Fix the first letter to match your initials.
  • Hangman, charades and Pictionary. Five letters is the sweet spot: long enough to be a real puzzle, short enough that the game stays quick.

Sample output

Ten words the generator produced with every filter left on Any:

child, voice, sweet, teach, stone, early, world, carry, field, major

And ten words with the start letter set to b and vowel count set to 1:

black, bring, brand, blend, brush, bunch, birth, bless, blind, brick

Other word lengths

The same dictionary and filters power generators for 3-letter, 4-letter, 6-letter, 7-letter and 8-letter words, so if a puzzle asks for a different length you can switch without learning a new tool. Everything word-related lives under all word & language generators.

Frequently asked questions

How many random 5 letter words can I generate at once?

Up to 10 per click. Press Generate word again for a fresh set; results are shuffled each time.

Can I get five-letter words that start with a specific letter?

Yes. Use the start letter dropdown, and optionally the end letter dropdown, to restrict the results. Both default to Any.

Are these valid Wordle words?

They are common English words, so almost all of them are accepted by Wordle. The list does not include the rarer words that Wordle also accepts, so it won't cover every possible guess.

Why do I get no results when I set 4 or 5 vowels?

None of the 1,715 five-letter words in the list has more than three vowels (counting a, e, i, o, u). Use 1, 2 or 3, or leave the field blank.

Does it generate made-up five-letter words?

No. Every result is a real dictionary word. For invented words that only sound real, use the Fake Word Generator.
