Bridgerton Name Generator

The Bridgerton Name Generator hands you three names at a time in the style of the show's high society: a title, a first name, a surname and an estate, as in Lady Arabella Eaton of Greyson Gardens or Lord Augustus Thacker of Sheffield Court. The list behind it holds 2,000 names, split evenly between Lords and Ladies. It is for fans answering "what is my Bridgerton name," writers naming minor characters for a Regency romance, and anyone running a themed party, a role-play or a Lady Whistledown-style gossip column who needs a suitably grand name in a hurry.

How it works

One dropdown, labeled Gender, offers Random, Male or Female. Male returns Lord names, Female returns Lady names, and Random draws from both. Press Generate Bridgerton Name and three names appear on cards. The count is fixed at three; press again for a fresh set. Names are pulled from the list rather than assembled on the fly, so the same full name can come up again in a later batch, although with 2,000 entries that is rare.

What is in a name

Every entry follows the same four-part pattern, and each part does a job.

• Title: Lord or Lady. In the Regency period these were courtesy titles for the children of peers and the wives of knights and barons. The show uses them loosely, and so does the list.
• First name: period-appropriate given names. Ladies lean toward Juniper, Emma, Portia, Evangeline, Allegra, Adeline and Daria; Lords toward Augustus, Ambrose, Cornelius, Frederick, Everett and Fletcher, with a few less likely entries such as Elvis and Diego mixed in.
• Surname: English family names of the sort you would find in a Debrett's entry: Egerton, Bainbridge, Dashwood, Canterbury, Darcy, Essex, Whitehead.
• Estate: "of" followed by one of 97 country seats and London addresses, from Kensington Gardens and Pembroke Lane to invented ones such as Xanthe's Crossing and Quinby Quay. The estate is what turns a name into a Bridgerton name.

Naming in the world of the ton

The show's families are named with intent. The Bridgertons' eight children are named alphabetically, Anthony through Hyacinth, a detail lifted straight from Julia Quinn's novels. The Featheringtons carry a slightly ridiculous surname to match their status anxiety, and Lady Danbury's is short and severe because she is. If you are inventing a Bridgerton last name of your own, the pattern is an English place name or trade name, two or three syllables, often ending in -ton, -ington, -bury, -worth or -brooke: Harrington, Cavendish, Berbrooke, Standish, Ravenscroft. Pair it with a Christian name from the period (Benedict, Colin, Eloise, Penelope, Daphne, Francesca) and an estate, and it will sit comfortably next to the originals.

Regency England was formal about address. A duke's daughter was Lady Firstname; a baronet's wife was Lady Surname; an untitled gentleman's daughter was Miss Surname, and only the eldest at that. The generator does not model any of this. Every name gets Lord or Lady, which is closer to the show than to the history, and is what most people want from a Regency name generator anyway.
