Comedy Movie Generator
Filter by streaming service, year and minimum IMDb rating, then get one comedy with its poster, synopsis, trailer and where to watch it.The Comedy Movie Generator picks one comedy for you to watch tonight, filtered by where you can stream it, when it came out and how well it is rated. Press Generate and you get a single film with its poster, year, IMDb score, a short synopsis, links to the services that carry it and a trailer. The genre is fixed to comedy; everything else is up to you.
The three filters
- Streaming provider. Leave it empty to search everything, or pick one or more of Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Crunchyroll, Disney+, fuboTV, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, Tubi TV and Vudu. The result will be something available on at least one of the services you chose.
- Year range. A two-handle slider from 1900 to 2025. Drag it to 1980–1989 for the Ghostbusters and Airplane era, or 2015–2025 for something recent.
- Minimum IMDb rating. A slider from 1 to 10, set to 5 by default. Push it to 7 and you cut most of the throwaway comedies; push it to 8 and you are down to the classics.
The filters go to our movie metadata service, which returns a batch of matching comedies. The first one is shown as your pick and the rest appear as recommendations beneath it, so you can browse without regenerating. If nothing matches (a rating of 9 on a single small service, say), the page tells you to loosen the filters.
What the result card shows
Each movie comes with its poster and a wide banner image, the title and release year, its genre tags (most comedies carry a second tag like romance, crime or animation), the IMDb rating with the number of votes, and a one-paragraph description. Below that is a row of "where to watch" buttons: one per streaming service that has the film, with the service logo and whether it is included with a subscription or a rental, each linking straight to the movie on that service. If a trailer is on file, a Watch Trailer link opens it on YouTube. The recommendations strip shows the other comedies that matched your filters; click one to swap it into the main card.
Getting a better pick
- Family night. Set the minimum rating to 6, pick Disney+ or Netflix, and you will mostly get animated and family comedies. For animation specifically, the Random Disney Movie Generator is narrower and quicker.
- Date night. Comedy with a rating floor of 7 tends to land on romantic comedies and well-liked ensemble films. The Date Night Movie Generator covers the same ground across genres.
- Only what you already pay for. Select just your services. A film that is a rental on Vudu and included on Hulu will show both, so check the button label before you press play.
- Something you haven't seen. Narrow the years to a decade you know least, keep the rating at 6 or above, and use the recommendations row to skip anything familiar.
- Any genre. If comedy isn't a fixed requirement, the Random Movie Generator has the same filters plus a genre picker with 19 options.
For a jump-scare instead of a laugh, the Random Horror Movie Generator is the same tool locked to horror. Everything film- and TV-related lives under all movie, TV & music generators.
A note on availability
Streaming catalogs change monthly and differ by country. The availability data comes from our metadata provider and reflects the US catalogs; if you are elsewhere, the film may not be on the service shown. The link on each button takes you to the title's page on that service, where you can confirm before you commit to the popcorn.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I choose a sub-genre like romantic comedy or dark comedy?
Not directly. The genre is locked to comedy. Use the rating and year filters, then look at the genre tags on each result: romantic comedies usually carry a romance tag and dark comedies a crime or drama tag. The recommendations row makes it quick to skim several.
- Does it only show movies I can stream?
If you select one or more streaming providers, yes. With no provider selected it searches the whole comedy catalog, and the where-to-watch buttons show whichever services currently carry the film.
- Why do I sometimes get 'no movies found'?
The combination was too narrow, usually a high minimum rating plus a single provider plus a short year range. Lower the rating or widen the years and try again.
- Does it pick a different movie each time?
Each press runs a new search and shows the first result, so the pick changes with the filters and with what the service returns. Use the recommendations under the card to see the other matches from the same search.
