Doctor Names Generator

Pick male, female or random and get up to 10 realistic fictional doctor names in the form Dr. First Last.

Choose male, female or random, set how many names you want (1 to 10), and press the button. You get that many doctor names in the form "Dr. First Last", drawn from a list of 710 fictional physicians: 320 tagged male and 390 tagged female. They read like names on a clinic door, not like puns. "Dr. Hannah Rodebush", "Dr. Saul Hanken", "Dr. Felicity Tiotuico" and "Dr. Griffin Stancombe" are typical output.

The tool is for writers who need a believable doctor in a scene, game designers filling a hospital level, teachers building role-play exercises, and anyone who needs placeholder names for a medical form or mock-up.

Options and output

Two controls. The number field takes 1 to 10. The gender select has three settings: Random draws from the whole list, Male draws from the 320 male entries, Female from the 390 female entries. Every result already carries the "Dr." prefix, so you don't have to add it, and each name shows in its own card. Click Generate again for a new draw; with 710 names, you'll rarely see a repeat within a session.

The male/female split is by first name, and it is a rough one. Unisex first names such as Leslie, Reed, Cameron or Jayce show up on both sides, which is fine for most character work but worth knowing if you are filling a form field that has to match.

How the names were built

Each entry pairs a common English-language first name with a surname that reads as American or European: Oltman, Scheidler, Huneycutt, Kaszuba, Cannata, Patino, Cai, Aziz. Many of the surnames are real surname forms with a letter or two changed (Withfield, Contreres, Francies), so a generated name is unlikely to match a practicing physician. That matters if you are putting a doctor's name in a published story, a game or a training document and don't want it to point at a real person.

What the list does not do: it does not produce comedy names like "Dr. Payne" or "Dr. Hurt", and it does not produce fantasy or sci-fi doctors. If you want joke names, the Stupid Name Generator and the Goofy Ahh Names Generator are built for that, and you can put "Dr." in front of whatever they give you.

Ways people use it

  • Fiction and screenwriting. A hospital scene needs an attending, a resident and a surgeon the reader will never meet again. Generate five, keep the three that sound different from each other.
  • Games and interactive fiction. NPC doctors, med-bay staff, a name on a prescription prop. The realistic style fits modern and near-future settings.
  • Mock-ups and test data. Appointment-booking screens, patient-portal demos and EHR training environments need a physician field filled with something plausible that is not a real employee.
  • Classroom role-play. Nursing and medical communication courses assign each student a doctor persona for a scenario.
  • Tabletop campaigns. A modern-day or horror campaign where the party visits a clinic and the GM has to name the doctor on the spot.

Picking a doctor name that fits the character

A few things that make a fictional doctor's name work. Keep the surname easy to say out loud; a patient in your story will call them "Dr. Hanken" a dozen times, so two syllables beat five. Give the doctor a first name from the right generation: a 62-year-old chief of surgery is more plausibly a Dorothy or an Abraham than a Braeden or a Nyla, and the list covers both ends. And if you need a matching family or a spouse, the Random Last Name Generator gives you surnames on their own, while the Couple Names Generator pairs two first names.

For a doctor from a specific country, pick a surname from a regional list instead: the German Name Generator or the Austrian Name Generator will give you a Dr. Müller or a Dr. Gruber that this page won't. More options are under all name generators.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate only female doctor names?

Yes. Set the gender dropdown to Female and the tool draws only from the 390 entries tagged female. Male limits it to the 320 male entries, and Random uses all 710.

Does it make funny doctor names?

No. The names here are realistic, the kind you would see on a clinic directory. For pun names such as Dr. Payne, use the Stupid Name Generator or the Goofy Ahh Names Generator on this site and add the Dr. yourself.

Are these real doctors?

No. The names are fictional pairings of first names and surnames, and many surnames have altered spellings. Any match with a real physician is coincidence, but if you are publishing, a quick search on the full name is still a good habit.

How many names can I get at once?

Between 1 and 10 per click. There is no limit on how many times you press the button.
