Harry Potter Character Generator

Get 1 to 10 random characters from the wizarding world, each with a short description, drawn from a list of 400 canon characters.

The Harry Potter Character Generator picks between one and ten characters at random from a list of 400 and shows each one as a card with the name and a single line explaining who they are. Ask for one and you might get Lucius Malfoy; ask for ten and you'll usually land a couple of names you have to think about, like Rolanda Hooch or Zacharias Mumps. It's meant for trivia hosts, fan-fiction writers and anyone who wants a random character to draw, cosplay or argue about.

What's in the list

The 400 entries are existing characters from the wizarding world, not invented ones. The bulk come from the seven novels: the Hogwarts staff and students, the Order of the Phoenix, the Death Eaters, the Ministry, the Weasley and Black family trees, and the shopkeepers and minor figures who get a paragraph in the books (Arabella Figg, Argus Filch, the Carrow siblings). A smaller set comes from the Fantastic Beasts films, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Hogwarts Legacy, and a handful are historical wizards known mainly from Chocolate Frog cards and the Hogwarts portraits. Every entry has a short description written to jog your memory rather than retell the plot, for example "Squib living near the Dursleys and a member of the Order of the Phoenix".

How to use it

Enter a number from 1 to 10 and press the button. The list is shuffled and the first N names are shown, so a single batch never repeats a character. There are no filters for house, blood status or which book a character appears in; the draw is across the whole list. If you want a specific slice, generate ten at a time and keep the ones that fit.

Ways people use it

  • Trivia and quiz rounds. Generate five names and ask the table to say which house, which side of the war, or which book each one first appears in. The obscure entries separate the casual fans from the ones who've read the books more than twice.
  • Fan fiction and role-play prompts. Draw two or three characters and write the scene where they meet. Random pairings such as Aberforth Dumbledore and Angelina Johnson are the kind of thing you'd never pick on purpose.
  • Drawing and cosplay challenges. Artists use it for daily sketch prompts, and cosplay groups use it to assign characters fairly when three people all want to be Hermione.
  • Sorting a group for a party. Generate as many names as you have guests and hand each one out as a "you are this character" tag.

Looking for an OC maker instead?

A lot of people arrive here searching for a Harry Potter OC generator or avatar creator. To be clear about what this page does: it picks real canon characters, it does not build an original character with a house, wand and backstory. If you're creating an OC, the useful move is to draw a few canon characters as a supporting cast, decide how your OC relates to them (roommate, rival, cousin), and build the profile from there. For the wand, the books give you the three variables Ollivander cares about: wood (holly, yew, vine, hawthorn and so on), core (phoenix feather, dragon heartstring or unicorn hair) and length, typically nine to fourteen inches.

Other character generators

For a different fandom, the Random DC Character Generator, Dragon Ball Character Generator and Random Movie Character Generator work the same way. If you want a mythological figure rather than a wizard, try the Random Greek God Generator. All of these are listed under all people & character generators.

Frequently asked questions

Does this generator create original Harry Potter characters?

No. It picks from 400 existing characters in the books, films and games. It does not generate a house, wand or backstory for a new character.

Which characters are included?

Characters from all seven novels make up most of the list, with additions from the Fantastic Beasts films, Cursed Child, Hogwarts Legacy and a few historical wizards from Chocolate Frog cards. Each has a one-line description.

Can I filter by Hogwarts house?

Not currently. The tool has one setting, the number of characters (1 to 10), and draws from the whole list.

Will I get the same character twice?

Not in the same batch, because the list is shuffled and sliced. Across separate presses, repeats are possible since every press starts from the full 400.
