Instagram Username Generator
Enter a name, choose a vibe and get up to 20 Instagram handle ideas, each with a copy button and a link to check availability. The Instagram Username Generator takes your name (or any word you want in the handle), a style, and optionally a favorite number and a length range, and returns up to 20 username ideas built around them. Each result has a copy button and a link that opens instagram.com/thatname so you can check whether it is taken. It is for the moment you open the sign-up form, type your name, and see "username isn't available" for the fourth time.
How the generator works
The form is in three steps.
- Enter your name. A first name, a full name like Bellamy Blake, a nickname or a brand. This is the seed; every username will be derived from it, so if you don't want your real name in the handle, type the word you do want instead.
- Pick a vibe. One of twelve styles: all styles, professional, nature-inspired, artistic, fantasy, catchy, sporty, cute, tech-inspired, sci-fi, funny or gamer. "All styles" mixes them. The vibe changes what gets attached to your name: professional gives you clean combinations like a first name plus an initial; gamer or sci-fi adds edgier suffixes; cute leans to soft words and doubled letters.
- Optional settings. A favorite number, which the generator will try to work in (13 becomes bellamy13, bellamy_13 or b13lake), and a length slider from 1 to 32 characters that bounds the results.
Press Generate and the request goes to our username API, which combines your inputs with the style rules and returns a list. We show the first 20. The names are generated fresh each time, so clicking again with the same inputs gives a different set.
What you get
Up to 20 usernames as cards, each with a copy button and a small Instagram icon that opens the profile URL for that handle in a new tab. If the page shows "Sorry, this page isn't available," the name is free (or the account is private and disabled, which is rare). The generator itself does not check availability; that link is how you check. It also does not follow Instagram's rules automatically, so read the next section before you commit.
Instagram's username rules
A few constraints decide whether a generated name will actually be accepted.
- Length: up to 30 characters. The slider goes to 32, so keep the top handle at 30 or below.
- Allowed characters: letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. No spaces, hyphens or symbols.
- Periods are allowed but not at the start, and consecutive periods are rejected.
- Case is ignored. BellamyBlake and bellamyblake are the same handle, so capital letters are purely cosmetic.
- Changing later: you can change your username in settings at any time, and Instagram holds your old handle for 14 days in case you want to switch back.
- Display name is separate. Your profile name can have spaces and emoji and does not need to be unique. The username is the @handle in the URL.
Practical advice that follows from this: short handles with no numbers are almost all taken on a platform with two billion accounts, so a favorite number or a single underscore is often the difference between available and not. Avoid trailing underscores and long digit strings; they read as bot accounts. And check how the name looks in lowercase, because that is how everyone will see it.
Where the handle needs to match
If you are setting up several accounts at once, run the same name and vibe through the Twitter Username Generator and Snapchat Username Generator and pick a handle that is free on all of them. The Gmail Username Generator does the same for an email address to go with the account. For gaming platforms with different length limits, there is a separate Twitch Name Generator, and the general Username Generator is not tied to any platform. More are listed under all name generators.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the generator check if the Instagram username is available?
Not automatically. Each result has an Instagram icon that opens instagram.com/ followed by the handle. If Instagram shows that the page isn't available, the username is free to register.
- Do I have to use my real name?
No. The name field is just the seed word. Type a nickname, a hobby, a pet's name or a brand and the results will be built around that instead.
- What does the favorite number do?
It tells the generator to include that number in some of the results, as a suffix, a separator or a letter swap. Leave it blank if you want number-free handles.
- Why are some results longer than 30 characters?
The length slider defaults to 1–32. Instagram caps usernames at 30, so drag the upper handle to 30 before generating.
- Can I change my Instagram username after I pick one?
Yes, from Edit Profile at any time. Instagram keeps your previous username reserved for you for 14 days.
