Island Name Generator

Pick how many names you want (1 to 10) and get random island names drawn from a list of over 1,000 real and invented islands.

The Island Name Generator hands you between one and ten island names per click, pulled at random from a list of just over 1,000 entries. About a third are real places (Capri, Palawan, Moreton Island, Wrightsville Beach) and the rest are made up in the same style: a short word or two followed by Bay, Reef, Haven, Shores, Isles, Tropic, Retreat, Sanctuary or Springs. It's built for writers, game masters and anyone naming a map who wants a batch of options fast rather than a single "perfect" answer.

How to use it

There is one setting. Type a number from 1 to 10 in the box (the default is 5), press the button, and the names appear as cards below the form. Press again for a completely fresh set; each click reshuffles the whole list before taking the first few, so you can run it a dozen times without seeing much repetition. Nothing is saved between visits and there's no account or limit.

If you want a longer shortlist, run it three or four times and copy the ones you like into a note. Ten per click keeps the results readable instead of dumping a wall of text.

What kind of names come out

The list mixes several flavors, and you'll usually get a bit of each in any batch of ten:

  • Real islands and beaches – The Maldives, Fogo, Bled Island, Hanalei Haven. Useful if you want a name that sounds plausible on a modern map.
  • Pirate and nautical – Doubloon Haven, Scurvy Sea Land, Howlers Reef, One Eye Reef. These fit treasure maps and Caribbean-style adventure settings.
  • Mythic and monster – Poseidon Bay, Bakunawa Haven, Lusca Bay, Monster Shores. Bakunawa is a Philippine sea serpent and Lusca is a Caribbean sea monster, so a few of these carry real folklore behind them.
  • Japanese-sounding invented names – Numako Island, Mihiro Tropic, Kazemi Reef, Suna Haven. Good for JRPG-style worlds.
  • Cozy or playful – Aloha Shores, Cool Sun Isles, Sandy Feet Reef, Jumping Frog Sanctuary, Nu-Nu Shores.
  • Dark or ominous – Blood Ring Springs, Fear Hallow Land, Hell 23 Springs, Eventide.

A handful of entries are borrowed from games (Varrock from RuneScape, Bevelle Sands echoing Final Fantasy X), so check the name if you plan to publish something commercial.

Where the names get used

  • Fantasy maps and D&D campaigns – an archipelago needs six or seven names in one sitting, and this gives you that in a click. Pair it with the Random Kingdom Name Generator for the mainland and the Tavern Name Generator for the port town.
  • Animal Crossing and other life sims – island names in New Horizons are capped at 10 characters, so look for the short ones (Capri, Fogo, Juniper, Laguna). The Animal Crossing Town Name Generator is tuned for that limit specifically.
  • Pirate and naval settings – combine an island name with the Pirate Ship Name Generator and you have a destination and a vessel for the same story.
  • Fiction and short stories – a private island, a resort, a shipwreck site. Names like Pandrosus Retreat or Wild Swan Tropic sound like places a travel brochure would print.
  • Minecraft and survival servers – naming a spawn island or a set of biomes so players can refer to them.

How real island names are built

If none of the generated names quite fit, it helps to know the patterns real islands follow, because the invented ones in this list copy them.

  • Descriptor + landform – Long Island, Coral Bay, Sandy Cay. The landform word tells you what kind of place it is: a cay or key is a small sandy island on a reef, an atoll is a ring of coral around a lagoon, a skerry is a rocky islet, and an isle is just a poetic island.
  • Saint or person – St. Lucia, Vancouver Island, Prince Edward Island. Colonial-era naming; it instantly reads as historical.
  • Local-language names – Palawan, Hanalei, Moorea. If your setting has its own culture, invent a couple of syllables in that language and add nothing else.
  • Event or legend – Christmas Island, Devil's Island, Isle of the Dead. These are the ones that carry story on their own.

The Civilization Name Generator and Street Names Generator follow the same idea for larger and smaller places. You'll find those and the rest of the place-name tools under all name generators.

Frequently asked questions

How many island names can I generate at once?

Between 1 and 10 per click. The input box won't accept anything outside that range. Click again for a new set; the list is reshuffled every time.

Are these real island names or made up?

Both. Roughly a third of the list are real islands, beaches and towns (Capri, Palawan, Moreton Island, Wrightsville Beach). The rest are invented names built the same way real ones are, with a descriptor plus Bay, Reef, Haven, Isles or similar.

Can I use a generated island name in a game or book?

The invented names are free to use. A few entries reference real places or game locations (for example Varrock), so if you're publishing commercially, search the name first to make sure it isn't trademarked.

Does it work for Animal Crossing island names?

Yes, but New Horizons limits island names to 10 characters, so pick from the short results (Fogo, Capri, Juniper, Laguna) or use the Animal Crossing Town Name Generator, which is built around that limit.
