Meta Description Generator

Describe the page and its main keyword, press the button, and get a suggested title and meta description to copy or download.
0/300

Describe a web page in a sentence or two, press the button, and the Meta Description Generator writes the snippet text that would sit under that page's title in a search result. It is for anyone who has a page to publish and has stared at the empty "meta description" field in WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or a Yoast box for longer than they would like to admit.

What to type in

The box takes up to 300 characters, and a counter shows how many you have used. Put in what the page is actually about, the main phrase you want to rank for, and who it is for. "Product page for a waterproof dog bed, keyword 'waterproof dog bed', for owners of large dogs, free shipping over $50" produces a far better result than "dog bed". If there is a specific call to action or a number worth mentioning (a price, a page count, a year), include it; the generator will usually work it in.

Your description is sent to our content API, which writes a short title and a description for the page. There are no other settings. If the first result is not right, press Generate Meta Description again for a new take on the same brief, or edit the brief to steer it.

What comes back

You get a result card showing a suggested page title as the heading and the meta description below it. You can copy both to the clipboard with one click, download them as a .txt file, or share them to WhatsApp, X or Facebook. Results are not stored anywhere, so copy what you want to keep. The generator does not measure pixel width, so check the character count yourself before pasting it into your CMS; the guidance below explains what to aim for.

What makes a meta description work

A meta description does not directly affect ranking. Google has said so for years. What it affects is whether someone clicks your result instead of the one above it, and Google will often replace a poor description with a sentence lifted from the page. A few rules keep your version in place and earning clicks:

  • Length. Google cuts the snippet at roughly 155 to 160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile, so put the important words in the first 120 characters. Anything past 160 is usually lost to an ellipsis.
  • Match the query. Words that match the search are shown in bold in the snippet, so the phrase the page targets should appear once, naturally, near the start.
  • Say what the page delivers. "Compare 12 waterproof dog beds by size, price and washability" tells the searcher what they will get. "Welcome to our website" tells them nothing.
  • One description per page. Duplicate descriptions across a site are one of the most common reasons Google rewrites them.
  • No quotes. A double quotation mark in the description can truncate it in the HTML, so use single quotes or none.

The tool tends to produce descriptions in the 120 to 160 character range, but it does not enforce a limit. Trim if needed, and read it once as a searcher would: if it wouldn't make you click, rewrite the brief and try again.

Pages this is handy for

  • Product and category pages on a store, where writing 200 descriptions by hand is the job nobody wants.
  • Blog posts, where the description should promise the specific answer the post gives, not summarize the topic.
  • Landing pages that need a one-line pitch. If you also need a strapline for the page itself, the Free AI Slogan Generator produces those.
  • Local service pages, where naming the town and the service in the first line matters more than anything clever.

The same content API powers the AI Introduction Generator for opening paragraphs, the AI Sentence Generator for single lines, and the Conclusion Generator for closing paragraphs, so you can draft a page top to bottom here. Browse all writing & AI tools for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for 120 to 155 characters. Google truncates most snippets at around 155 to 160 characters on desktop and earlier on mobile, so front-load the key phrase and the promise of the page.

Does the generator count characters for me?

The input box counts the characters of your brief (up to 300). The generated description is not measured, so check its length before pasting it into your CMS.

Will Google use the description I generate?

Only if it fits the query. Google rewrites a large share of meta descriptions, usually because they are missing, duplicated across pages or don't match what the page is about. A specific, unique description that includes the target phrase has the best chance of being shown as written.

Can I generate descriptions for many pages at once?

No. The tool handles one brief at a time. For a batch of similar pages, write one good brief and change the product or topic name for each run.
