The Pokemon Town Name Generator returns real town and city names from the main-series games, such as Lavender Town, Ecruteak City, Verdanturf Town or Jubilife City. The list has 98 locations across seven regions. It's for fan-fiction writers picking a setting, Nuzlocke players who want a random starting point, quiz hosts and anyone trying to remember where a gym was.

Regions and how many towns each has

The Region dropdown filters the list; Random draws from all of it.

• Kanto (11): Pallet Town through Cinnabar Island and Indigo Plateau, from Red, Blue, Yellow and their remakes.
• Sevii Islands (7): One Island through Seven Island, the post-game archipelago from FireRed and LeafGreen.
• Johto (12): New Bark Town to Blackthorn City, plus a couple of Heart Gold and Soul Silver facilities such as Safari Zone Gate and Frontier Access.
• Hoenn (16): Littleroot Town to Ever Grande City, from Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
• Sinnoh (18): Twinleaf Town to Sunyshore City and the Pokemon League, from Diamond, Pearl and Platinum.
• Unova (20): Nuvema Town through the Black and White 2 additions such as Aspertia City.
• Kalos (16): Vaniville Town to Lumiose City and Kiloude City, from X and Y.

Alola, Galar, Paldea and Hisui are not in the list yet, so if you filter by region you'll only see the seven above. Results are shown as plain text cards with no map, gym leader or game reference attached.

Pokemon town name themes, region by region

The games name their towns to a pattern, which is useful to know both for quizzes and for inventing your own. Kanto towns are colors in the English localization: Pallet, Viridian (green), Pewter (gray), Cerulean (blue), Vermilion (red), Lavender, Celadon (green), Saffron (yellow), Fuchsia, Cinnabar (red). Johto towns are plants and trees: Cherrygrove, Violet, Azalea, Goldenrod, Olivine, Mahogany, Blackthorn, Ecruteak (ecru plus teak). Hoenn shifts to earthy compounds and textures: Littleroot, Petalburg, Rustboro, Slateport, Verdanturf, Fallarbor, Lilycove, Mossdeep. Sinnoh names are emotional or atmospheric abstractions: Jubilife, Floaroma, Eterna, Hearthome, Solaceon, Celestic, Snowpoint, Sunyshore. Unova (modeled on New York) uses cloud and weather words: Nuvema, Striaton, Nacrene, Castelia, Nimbasa, Driftveil, Mistralton, Icirrus, Opelucid. Kalos (modeled on France) goes with light and glamour: Vaniville, Aquacorde, Santalune, Lumiose, Camphrier, Cyllage, Shalour, Coumarine, Laverre, Anistar, Couriway, Snowbelle.

Inventing your own Pokemon town names

This tool only returns canon names, so if you're building a fan region you'll need to make your own. The trick is to pick one theme for the whole region and one suffix rule (Town for small, City for large, Village or Island when it fits). Names in the style of the games, none of which are from an actual title, look like: Lumina Lagoon City, Galewood Town, Echoing Peak Village, Thunderclap Bay, Serenity Springs Town, Crystal Cove City, Aurora Ridge Village, Celestial Meadow City. Each takes a nature or light word, pairs it with a landform, and adds the suffix. Generate a batch of real names first to see the rhythm, then build yours to match.
