Random Bible Verse Generator
Get 1 to 30 random verses with their reference, from 1,463 verses across 65 books, filtered by topic or fully random.Press the button and the Random Bible Verse Generator shows you one or more verses, each with its full text and a book, chapter and verse reference such as Luke 6:31 or Ephesians 1:7. You can ask for anywhere from 1 to 30 verses at once and either leave the topic on Random or pick one of 46 topics, from Love and Faith to Punishment and War. The verses come from a hand-collected set of 1,463 verses spanning 65 books of the Bible, with the text in modern English (the wording matches the NIV for the verses we checked).
It is meant for a quick verse of the day, for finding a verse on a particular theme without paging through a concordance, and for anyone preparing a card, a bulletin, a lesson or a social post who wants a reference they can quote accurately.
Options
- Number of verses: 1 to 30. Each verse is a separate card.
- Topic: Random draws from all 1,463 verses. Choosing a topic restricts the draw to verses tagged with it. Topic sizes vary: Heaven has 72 verses and Children 68, most topics have 30 to 40, and War and Judgment have 10 each. If you ask for more verses than a topic contains, the tool tells you how many are available instead of padding the list.
Verses within one draw never repeat. Pressing the button again gives a fresh draw, so with small topics you will see the same verses come around quickly.
What each card shows
The verse text in large type, then the reference (book, chapter and verse) and the topic it was filed under. A copy button on each card puts the verse text on your clipboard. It copies the sentence only, not the reference, so add "Luke 6:31" yourself if you are pasting into a message.
The topics in the list
The 46 topics are a mix of virtues, relationships, doctrines and life situations rather than a formal theological index. The largest groups are Heaven, Children, Healer, Wisdom and Pastor. The relationship topics (Husband, Wife, Parents, Children, Fellowship, Church) are useful for weddings, dedications and family cards. The character topics (Kindness, Diligence, Steadfastness, Generosity, Compassion, Obedience) are the ones people reach for in devotionals and classroom posters. Comfort, Peace, Hope and Deliverance are the ones we would point you to for a sympathy card or a difficult week.
Where do the verses come from? Proverbs contributes the most, at just over 200 verses, followed by Matthew, Luke, Psalms, Romans, Isaiah, John and 1 Corinthians. The Old Testament history books are thinner, which is why a Random draw skews toward wisdom literature and the Gospels.
Ways people use it
- Verse of the day. Leave the topic on Random, set the number to 1, and press once each morning.
- Cards and captions. Pick the topic that fits the occasion (Blessings for a baby, Comfort for a loss, Joy for a birthday), generate ten, and choose the one that reads best at a glance.
- Sunday school and small groups. Draw five verses on Forgiveness or Mercy and ask the group to read them together and compare what each one says. The reference on every card lets people look up the surrounding passage.
- Memory practice. Generate a verse, cover the text, and try to recall it from the reference. If you would rather read a whole passage than a single line, the Random Bible Chapter Generator picks a book and chapter to read.
Sample output
| Topic | Reference | Verse |
|---|---|---|
| Love | Leviticus 19:18 | Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. |
| Humanity | Luke 6:31 | Do to others as you would have them do to you. |
| Abundance | Psalm 65:11 | You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with abundance. |
| Obedience | Colossians 3:20 | Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. |
| Children | Proverbs 20:7 | The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them. |
A note on reading verses in isolation: a single line can sound different from the passage around it. The reference is there so you can check the context before you quote it. For something lighter, the Random Fortune Generator hands out fortune-cookie lines, and the Random Book Generator suggests something to read next. More text tools are under all books, quotes and poetry tools.
Frequently asked questions
- Which translation are the verses in?
The text is modern English and matches the New International Version for every verse we spot-checked. If you need a specific translation for a publication, confirm the wording against your preferred Bible using the reference on the card.
- Can I get a random verse from a specific topic like faith or hope?
Yes. Pick the topic from the dropdown before pressing the button. Faith has 25 verses and Hope has 29, so you can draw up to that many in one go.
- Why did I get an error saying only a few verses are available?
You asked for more verses than the chosen topic contains. War and Judgment have 10 verses each, Trust, Righteousness, Obedience and Deliverance have 20. Lower the number or switch to Random, which draws from all 1,463.
- Does the copy button include the reference?
No, it copies the verse text only. The reference is shown on the card so you can type it after the quote.
