Random Direction Generator

The Random Direction Generator picks one compass direction at random and shows it in large text. There are three modes in the dropdown: Random draws from all eight points of the compass, Cardinal Direction limits it to North, South, East and West, and Ordinal Direction limits it to Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest. It's a direction randomizer for walks with no destination, board games, D&D encounters, and any moment where "just pick a way" is the whole decision.

It gives compass directions, not left or right. If you want a left-or-right coin flip, the closest tools here are the Odd or Even Generator (assign left to odd, right to even) or the Spin the Arrow spinner, which points somewhere on a circle and is the better fit for "which way" at an actual intersection.

How to use it

1. Pick a mode from the dropdown. Random is selected by default.
2. Press Generate Direction. The result appears below in large text, for example "Southwest".
3. Press again for a new draw. Each pick is independent, so in cardinal mode you have a one-in-four chance of any given direction on every click.

That's the whole tool. There's no count input, no history, and nothing saved, which is why it loads instantly and works fine on a phone in one hand.

The eight directions and what they mean

Cardinal directions are the four main points; ordinal (also called intercardinal) directions sit halfway between them. Go one step finer and you get the sixteen-point compass with north-northeast, east-northeast and so on, which this tool doesn't include. On a phone compass app, the bearing column above is the number you'd turn to face.

Things people do with a random direction

• Aimless walks and "dérive" city exploring – at each corner, generate a direction and take the street that heads most nearly that way. Cardinal mode works best on a grid; use Random where streets run diagonal.
• Hex-crawl and sandbox RPGs – when the party has no plan, the wind blows them somewhere. A random direction plus a random encounter is a whole session. Game masters using an eight-direction hex or square grid can use Random mode directly.
• Geocaching and photo challenges – walk 200 steps in the generated direction, take a photo, repeat. It forces you out of the streets you always shoot.
• Board games with movement choice – any game where a piece can move in any direction and you want the choice made for you, or want to move a neutral piece fairly.
• Teaching compass points – call out a direction and have kids point, or turn a map. Cardinal mode for younger ones, ordinal mode once they've got the first four.
• Survival and orienteering drills – practice taking a bearing without a fixed target: generate a direction, then find it with a real compass or the sun.
