Random Football Team Generator

The Random Football Team Generator picks one to five clubs from a list of 199 soccer teams and shows each with its crest, name and country. You can leave the country on Random or narrow it to one of 17: England, Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany hold most of the list, with smaller sets from Brazil, Scotland, Wales, Argentina and a single club each from Portugal, Greece, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. It's football in the world sense, meaning soccer; there are no NFL teams here.

What you can set

• Number of teams: 1 to 5 per click (the default is 1).
• Country: Random, or any one of the 17 countries. If you ask for more teams than a country has (Portugal, for example, has only Benfica), you'll get as many as exist.

Each result is a card with the club's crest, its full name (Club Atletico River Plate, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, Newcastle United) and the country beneath it. No league, city, stadium or squad information is shown.

Which clubs are in the list

The English set is the deepest and goes well past the Premier League into the Championship, which is why Derby County and Millwall come up as often as the big six. The Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch and German lists are mostly top-flight clubs. The list is a fixed snapshot rather than a live feed, so promotions and relegations since it was compiled aren't reflected, and clubs from leagues outside Europe and South America (MLS, the Saudi Pro League, the J-League) aren't included.

Ways people use it

• Career mode and Football Manager saves. Set the country to Random, generate one, and that's the club you manage. Restricting to England and taking a lower-table result makes for a harder save.
• FIFA and eFootball matchups. Generate two and play them against each other; generate five for a mini tournament bracket.
• Sweepstakes and draws. Assign each person in a group a random club for a cup competition.
• Learning crests. Cover the name, show the badge, guess the club. Works well with the Italian and Dutch lists, which most casual fans know less well.
• Picking a second team to follow. Choose a country you'd like to watch more of and let the generator decide.
