Random Movie Character Generator

One click picks a famous film character from a list of 100 and shows their name and picture, never the same one twice in a row.

The Random Movie Character Generator picks one character from a list of 100 well-known film characters and shows you their name and a picture. Press the button and you might get Ellen Ripley, Indiana Jones, The Dude, Amélie Poulain, Hannibal Lecter, Edna Mode or Darth Vader. It is a single-button tool with no filters, built for people who need a character they did not choose: for a drawing prompt, a costume, an impression, a "who would win" argument or a quiz round.

How it works

Each press draws one character at random from the 100 and displays a card with the name and an image. The tool remembers the last result and redraws if it lands on the same one, so two presses in a row always give different characters. There is no gender, genre, decade or franchise filter, and no "generate five" option; you press once per character. The card shows the name and picture only, with no description or film title, though for most of these the film is obvious.

Who is in the list

The list leans toward characters that turn up on best-of lists, so it is heavy on late-twentieth-century Hollywood with a few animated and international entries. A rough breakdown:

  • Action and adventure heroes: Indiana Jones, John McClane, Ethan Hunt, James Bond, Rocky Balboa, Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Snake Plissken, Jack Burton, Axel Foley, Harry Callahan, Katniss Everdeen.
  • Villains and antiheroes: Darth Vader, The Joker, Hannibal Lecter, Anton Chigurh, Hans Landa, Keyser Söze, Norman Bates, Tony Montana, Patrick Bateman, Travis Bickle, Tyler Durden, Amy Dunne, Lou Bloom, Daniel Plainview, Bane, Loki.
  • Fantasy and sci-fi: Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Bilbo and Samwise, Gollum, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Neo, Roy Batty, Rick Deckard, the T-800, Captain Kirk, Captain Mal Reynolds, E.T., Groot, Star-Lord, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Batman, Optimus Prime.
  • Comedy: The Dude and Walter Sobchak, Ron Burgundy, Ace Ventura, Ferris Bueller, Frank Drebin, Inspector Clouseau, Peter Venkman, Withnail, Shaun Riley, Marge Gunderson, M. Gustave.
  • Animated: Woody, Gromit, The Minions, Edna Mode.
  • Drama: Vito and Michael Corleone, Tommy DeVito, Jules Winnfield, Atticus Finch, George Bailey, Rick Blaine, Forrest Gump, Randle McMurphy, Lester Burnham, Lisbeth Salander, Donnie Darko, Maximus, Wednesday Addams, The Bride, Driver.

It is not a list of every movie character ever, and it is not curated by decade or country. If you want a Marvel or DC hero, a Disney princess or a cartoon, the dedicated tools will serve you better.

Ways people use it

  • Charades and impressions. Generate, keep the screen hidden, act it out. The list is famous enough that most guesses land.
  • Drawing and cosplay prompts. The image gives you a reference for costume and pose. Doc Brown, Edna Mode and The Bride are all easy to identify from a silhouette.
  • Film trivia rounds. Show the picture and ask for the character, the actor or the film. Ask for the year for a hard mode.
  • Writing exercises. Generate two characters and write the scene where they meet. Gromit and Anton Chigurh is a stranger prompt than anything you would pick on purpose.
  • Settling debates. Random pairs for "who would win", tournament brackets and tier lists.

Frequently asked questions

How many movie characters are in the generator?

100. Each has a name and a picture. The list is fixed and there are no filters, so every press is a draw from the same 100.

Can I get more than one character at a time?

No. The tool shows one character per press. Press again for another; it never repeats the previous result immediately.

Does it include TV or video game characters?

It is a film list, although a few characters (Captain Kirk, Captain Mal Reynolds, Wednesday Addams) are best known from TV and appear here because of their films. Video game characters have their own generator.

Can I filter by genre or gender?

No. There is only one button. The list has roughly ten female leads (Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, Katniss Everdeen, Lisbeth Salander, Amy Dunne, The Bride, Marge Gunderson, Amélie Poulain, Wednesday Addams, Edna Mode), so you may need several presses to land on one.
