Random Personality Generator

The Random Personality Generator works in two modes. Simple gives you one entry from a list of 248: sometimes a single trait such as Meticulous or Spontaneous, sometimes a three-word combination such as Clever, Witty and Humorous. Detailed picks one of the 16 Myers-Briggs types and builds a 14-line profile around it, with each line drawn at random from a pool of about 20 descriptors written for that type. It is made for writers and game masters who need a character's temperament in seconds, and for anyone running an icebreaker who wants a personality to act out.

Simple mode

Pick Simple in the dropdown, press Generate Personality, and you get one line. The 248 entries are a mix of single adjectives (Adventurous, Reserved, Pragmatic, Tenacious) and grouped traits that read like a character summary (Caring, Kind and Compassionate; Competitive, Spirited and Tenacious; Confident, Decisive and Strong). Press again for another; there is no batch option, and the list is small enough that you will see repeats over a long session.

Detailed mode

Pick Detailed and the result starts with a title in the form INTJ - The Architect: Imaginative, strategic, ambitious, then a table with one descriptor for each of these 14 dimensions:

• Psychology, self-discipline and lifestyle
• Social attitude, manners and honesty
• Intelligence, positivity and confidence
• Emotional capacity and current emotional state
• Assertiveness, rebelliousness and activeness

Every descriptor is picked from a list written for that specific type, so an ISTJ's psychology line comes from words like Methodical, Duty-bound and Fact-oriented, while an ENFP's comes from a different pool. Generate the same type twice and the title matches but the 14 lines differ, which gives you variation inside a consistent temperament rather than a random pile of adjectives.

The 16 types in the detailed list

The titles follow the popular nicknames for the MBTI types. Each type is a four-letter code: Introverted or Extraverted, Sensing or iNtuitive, Thinking or Feeling, Judging or Perceiving.

A note on what this is not: the MBTI is a personality framework, not a clinical instrument, and this tool assigns a type at random rather than assessing anyone. Use it for fiction and games, not for describing real people.

Ways to use a random personality

• Fleshing out a character. Start with a Detailed result and treat the 14 lines as a brief: an INFP who is currently Anxious but Honest and Rebellious behaves differently from one who is Serene. Pair it with a random job and a set of likes and dislikes and you have a character sheet.
• NPCs at the table. Simple mode is faster for a game master who needs the temperament of a shopkeeper mid-session: one word, no reading.
• Improv and drama exercises. Each performer draws a Simple result and plays a scene in that personality while the others guess the trait.
• Writing prompts. Generate two personalities and write the conversation between them; the contrast (Reserved meets Charismatic) is the prompt.
