Random PS4 Games

Enter a number from 1 to 10, press generate, and you get that many PlayStation 4 game titles chosen at random from a hand-picked list of 229 real PS4 releases. The list mixes Sony's first-party exclusives, the big multiplatform games of the console's 2013 to 2023 lifespan, and the indies that people still recommend. It is a title-only picker: you get the name of the game, nothing else, which is all you need when the problem is deciding what to play.

What you can set

There is one control, the number of games, and it defaults to 5. Each press shuffles the full list and shows the first however-many you asked for, so a batch of ten is always ten different games. There is no genre, year, player-count or price filter. If you want a co-op game specifically, generate ten and scan for the ones you know fit; It Takes Two, Overcooked! 2, A Way Out, Borderlands 3 and Fall Guys are all in there.

What is on the list

We chose the games by hand rather than scraping a store listing, so the list leans toward titles that are still worth playing rather than every shovelware release. Roughly, it breaks down like this:

• Sony exclusives and first-party games, about 45 of them: God of War and Ragnarök, both Last of Us games, Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne, Gran Turismo Sport and 7, Days Gone, Death Stranding, Detroit: Become Human, Until Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, Dreams, Persona 5 Royal and Final Fantasy VII Remake among them.
• Big multiplatform releases: Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, The Witcher 3, Elden Ring, the Dark Souls games, Sekiro, Cyberpunk 2077, the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry entries of the era, Resident Evil 2, 3, 7 and Village, Monster Hunter: World, the Call of Duty and Battlefield games, Doom, Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, and the FIFA, NBA 2K and Madden entries.
• JRPGs and Japanese action games: Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest XI, NieR: Automata, Kingdom Hearts III, the Yakuza series, Judgment, Nioh 1 and 2, Tales of Arise, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ.
• Indies and smaller games, around 40: Hollow Knight, Celeste, Hades, Dead Cells, Cuphead, Stardew Valley, Journey, Inside, Outer Wilds, What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch, Subnautica, Tetris Effect, Slay the Spire and the Life is Strange games.

Games that were PS5-only (Demon's Souls, Returnal, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI) are deliberately left out. Cross-generation games that shipped on PS4 as well, like God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy, are included. Where a title is ambiguous we add the year, so you see "God of War (2018)" and "Resident Evil 2 (2019)" rather than a name that could mean the original.

Ways people use it

• Clearing a backlog. If you own twenty games and cannot commit to one, roll five, play the first one you actually own, and stop scrolling the dashboard.
• Streaming and challenge runs. Streamers use a random pick as a viewer-visible way to choose the next game, and "random PS4 game" challenge videos work better when the picker is a fixed, public list.
• PS Plus and sale browsing. Roll a handful of titles and check which are currently in the PS Plus catalog or on sale before buying.
• Game night with friends. Everyone rolls one title; the group plays whichever comes up that the host owns.
• Trivia. The list is a decent quiz bank: read a title, ask for the developer, release year or platform exclusivity.
