Random Ship Name Generator

Pick 1 to 10 boat and ship names, from Serendipity to The Kraken, out of a list of 119.

The Random Ship Name Generator gives you one to ten names from a list of 119 boat and ship names. The list is the kind of thing you see painted on transoms in a marina: Serendipity, Wanderlust, Zephyr, Carpe Diem, Aquaholic, Long Weekend, Dock-topus, The Great Gatsea, with a run of sea-monster names (The Kraken, Leviathan, Megalodon, Cthulhu, Hammerhead) for people who want the boat to sound dangerous. It is for naming a real boat, a fishing kayak, a narrowboat, a ship in a novel or a vessel in a game.

How it works

Set the number (1 to 10) and press Generate Ship Name. Names appear on cards. There are no categories or filters, so a batch of ten mixes serene names, jokes and monsters. Press again for a new shuffle; with 119 names you can see the whole list in about twelve runs.

What kinds of names are in the list

  • Feelings and ideals: Serendipity, Imagination, Liberty, Wanderlust, Beauty, Unsinkable.
  • Wind, sea and myth: Gale, Zephyr, Neptune, Atlantis, Wayfarer, Flying Dutchman, The Antarctic.
  • Gems and colors: Sapphire, Aquamarine, Amazonite, Alexandrite, Coral.

  • Puns and jokes: Shark Bait, Aquaholic, Dock-topus, The Great Gatsea, Go with the Flow, Long Weekend.

How real ships get their names

Pleasure boats are named by their owners, and the list above follows those habits: a pun, a mood, or a family in-joke, often with "The" in front. Warships follow rules, and since a lot of people arrive here looking for a warship name generator, here is how the big navies do it.

The US Navy names by ship type. Aircraft carriers are named for presidents and, occasionally, members of Congress (USS Gerald R. Ford, USS John F. Kennedy). Destroyers are named for naval heroes (USS Arleigh Burke). Attack submarines have shifted from fish to cities and states (USS Virginia, USS Los Angeles); ballistic-missile submarines take state names (USS Ohio). Cruisers were named for battles (USS Ticonderoga), amphibious ships for battles and famous earlier ships (USS Wasp), and supply ships for explorers and pioneers. All carry the prefix USS, United States Ship.

The Royal Navy uses HMS (His Majesty's Ship) and reuses historic names across generations: Ark Royal, Dreadnought, Invincible, Illustrious, Daring, Astute, Queen Elizabeth, Prince of Wales. Adjectives and virtues (Audacious, Dauntless, Defender, Diamond, Dragon, Duncan for the Type 45 destroyers) and place names (Type 23 frigates are "Duke" class, named for dukedoms: Westminster, Portland, Somerset) are the two main patterns.

Other conventions worth borrowing for fiction: French warships often take names of provinces and admirals (Charles de Gaulle, Bretagne), German ships have used states and cities (Sachsen, Hamburg), Japanese destroyers use weather and natural phenomena (Kongo, Akizuki, "autumn moon"), and merchant ships and cruise liners take feminine or aspirational names with the company's house style (Queen Mary 2, Harmony of the Seas). Pirate and privateer ships, historically, were renamed captured vessels and leaned on menace: Queen Anne's Revenge, Whydah, Fancy, Royal Fortune.

To turn a name from this list into a warship name, add a prefix and drop the joke: HMS Zephyr, USS Liberty (a real ship, incidentally), HMS Gale, USS Leviathan. For a proper pirate vessel, the Pirate Ship Name Generator is built for that.

Uses

  • Naming a real boat. Owners generate ten, argue about it over dinner, and check the marina register so they are not the third Serendipity on the dock.
  • Fiction and games. A vessel in a novel, a ship in Sea of Thieves or a starship in a space game; the myth and monster names transfer best.
  • Fantasy settings. Pair a ship with a home port from the Island Name Generator or a realm from the Random Kingdom Name Generator, and a dockside bar from the Tavern Name Generator.
  • Rowing, sailing and school teams. Club boats and racing shells need names too, and Unsinkable or Wave Runner reads well on a hull.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a warship name generator?

Not directly. The 119 names are recreational boat names, from Serendipity to Aquaholic. For a warship, add HMS or USS to one of the serious names (Zephyr, Gale, Liberty, Leviathan) or follow the naval conventions described on this page: presidents and heroes for the US Navy, historic and virtue names for the Royal Navy.

Are the names free to use on my boat?

Yes. Boat names are not exclusive; the only practical check is whether another vessel in your marina or club already uses it. Registration rules in most countries require the name and port to be legible on the hull, nothing more.

Why does the same name keep coming up?

The list has 119 entries, so a few repeats across runs are normal. Asking for 10 at a time gets you through the list faster.

Can I get pirate ship names here?

A handful of names in the list fit a pirate vessel (The Kraken, Flying Dutchman, Shark Bait), but the Pirate Ship Name Generator is dedicated to that style.
