The Random Spanish Word Generator picks one to ten words at random from a list of 1,000 of the most common Spanish words and shows each one with a short English meaning. The list is a frequency list, so it's the vocabulary you actually meet in Spanish text and speech: pronouns like se, lo and usted, verbs like conseguir, elegir and recorrer, and everyday nouns and adjectives like investigación, indígena, rojo and enorme. It's built for learners who want a flashcard they didn't choose, and for teachers who need a word on the spot.
How it works
Enter a number from 1 to 10 and press Generate Spanish Word. The tool shuffles the list and takes the first N, so one draw never repeats a word. Each result is a card with the Spanish word on top, capitalized, and the English meaning underneath. Press again for a new set. There's no filter by part of speech or difficulty; every draw is a slice of the same 1,000-word list.
What's in the word list
Because it's frequency-based rather than themed, the mix is skewed the way real Spanish is. Expect:
- Function words: por, pues, se, le, nos. These are the top of any frequency list and they come up often. The meanings are brief ("to him, to her", "you [formal]") rather than full grammar notes.
- Verbs in the infinitive: conseguir (to get), elegir (to choose), recorrer (to travel through). Conjugations aren't included.
- Adjectives: vivo, financiero, medio, enorme, total, shown in the masculine singular.
- Nouns: principio, importancia, investigación, without the article, so gender isn't shown on the card.
Accents are included where the word has them (él, investigación, indígena). The card capitalizes the first letter of each word for display, so él appears as "Él"; that's a display choice, not a spelling change.
Ways people use it
- Daily vocabulary drills. Draw ten, write a sentence with each, check the meaning. The frequency list means you're practicing words worth knowing rather than "platypus."
- Spanish Pictionary or charades. Draw one word at a time and hide the meaning. Function words like se are impossible to draw, so skip them and redraw; nouns and verbs work well.

Why a frequency list matters
The most common 1,000 words in Spanish cover somewhere around 80 to 85 percent of the words in ordinary conversation and news text. That's why a random draw from this list is a better use of study time than a random draw from a dictionary: nearly every word you see will show up again in the next article you read or podcast you hear. The trade-off is that the list is heavy on small grammatical words; if you get se, lo and le in one draw, just press again.
