Random TV Show Generator
Get one random series from 1,000 Netflix and Prime Video shows, with poster, IMDb rating, plot summary, cast and a watch link. The Random TV Show Generator picks one series at random from a catalog of 1,000 shows, half of them on Netflix and half on Prime Video, and shows you the poster, release year, IMDb rating, a plot summary, the main cast and a Watch Now button that opens the show on its streaming service. It is built for the "we have been scrolling for twenty minutes" problem: press the button, read the card, decide.
Filters you can set
The genre picker is the control that actually narrows the pool. You can select any combination of 18 genres: action, animation, comedy, crime, drama, fantasy, history, horror, family, music, thriller, romance, sci-fi, sport, war, western, European and reality. A show only needs to match one of your selected genres to qualify, so picking "comedy" and "animation" gives you shows that are either, not both. Leave it empty for all 1,000.
The form also shows a year-range slider (1900 to 2025) and a minimum-rating slider (1 to 10). In the current version of the picker these two sliders are displayed but not applied to the draw, so a low-rated 1960s show can still come up with the rating slider at 8. Treat the genre selection as the working filter.
What the result card shows
- Poster image and title, with the release year and language code (most entries are ENG).
- IMDb rating and the number of votes it is based on, so a 9.5 from 1.7 million votes reads differently from a 9.5 from 900.
- A plot summary, trimmed to 25 words with a "more" toggle for the full text.
- The cast, four names by default with a "more" toggle. Stranger Things, for example, lists 17 actors.
- Genre tags for that show.
- A Watch Now link that goes straight to the title page on Netflix or Prime Video.
What is in the 1,000-show catalog
The list was pulled from streaming catalog metadata and is split exactly 500/500 between Netflix and Prime Video titles. Release years run from 1958 to 2023, so it covers The Twilight Zone era through recent seasons, though the bulk of entries are from the 2010s. Every entry carries an IMDb ID, rating and vote count, an episode running time, a genre list, and a deep link to the service. It leans toward English-language scripted series, with reality, animation and a set of European productions mixed in. The top of the list includes Breaking Bad (9.5, drama/thriller/crime), Stranger Things (8.7) and Friends, and the rest runs through the long tail of both services.
Because the catalog is a snapshot, a show can move off a service after the list was compiled. The Watch Now link will then land on a page that says the title is unavailable in your region.
Ways people use it
- Picking tonight's series. Set genre to drama or thriller and accept the first result with a rating you're happy with. Two draws max, or you are back to scrolling.
- Breaking a rewatch loop. If you keep returning to the same sitcom, a random comedy from the other 499 is a low-effort way out. For the loop itself, there is a Random Friends Episode Generator.
- Household tie-breakers. Each person picks a genre, the randomizer picks the show, nobody gets to veto.
- Finding older shows. Select "western", "war" or "history" and you will surface titles from the 1960s to 1990s that the streaming home screens never recommend.
For films instead of series, the Random Movie Generator does the same thing with real year and rating filters, and the Random Disney Movie Generator and Date Night Movie Generator narrow it further. If you only need a genre to start from, use the Random Genre Generator. All of these are listed under all movie, TV & music generators.
Frequently asked questions
- Which streaming services are covered?
Netflix and Prime Video only, 500 shows each. Shows that are exclusive to Hulu, Max, Disney+ or Apple TV+ are not in the list.
- Does the year range or minimum rating filter work?
Not at the moment. Both sliders are on the form, but the picker currently applies only the genre selection when it draws a show. The IMDb rating and year are still shown on the card so you can judge the pick yourself.
- Can I get several shows at once?
No, one series per press. Press Generate TV Show again for another draw; the pool is reshuffled each time.
- Where do the IMDb ratings come from?
They were captured with the catalog data, along with the vote count shown next to the rating. They are not live, so a rating can drift from what IMDb shows today.
- Is the Watch Now link free?
It opens the show's page on Netflix or Prime Video. You need a subscription to the service the show is on; the generator itself is free.
