Random US State Generator
Picks one of the 50 US states at random and shows its flag, postal abbreviation and capital city. The Random US State Generator picks one of the 50 states with a single press and shows you its flag, its two-letter postal abbreviation and its capital. Every state has the same one-in-fifty chance, so you're as likely to get Wyoming as California. Press again and it draws fresh; previous picks are not excluded.
It exists for the moments when you need a state chosen for you: a geography drill, a road-trip argument, a classroom game, a "which state should my character be from" decision. It's also a decent way to learn the flags, since most people can name fewer than ten of them.
What the result shows
- The state flag, drawn from a set of 50 SVG flag images stored on the site.
- The state name with its USPS abbreviation, for example "Missouri (MO)".
- The capital city, which is often not the biggest city. New York's capital is Albany, California's is Sacramento, and Nevada's is Carson City rather than Las Vegas.
The tool draws from a list that also stores each state's area, year of statehood, motto, state bird, tree and flower, but the card only displays the flag, abbreviation and capital. Washington, D.C. and the territories are not included; it's strictly the 50 states.
Ways to use a random state pick
- Capitals and flags practice. Cover the card, generate, and name the capital before looking. Do the reverse with the flag hidden. The table below is the answer key.
- Trip planning by chance. Groups that can't agree on a summer road trip sometimes let the state randomizer decide, then plan around what's there. Pair it with the US City Generator to narrow it further, or the Random Town Generator if you want somewhere small.
- Classroom assignments. Teachers use it to hand out state report topics without anyone claiming favoritism when a student gets Rhode Island instead of Hawaii.
- Writing and roleplay. A character's home state changes their accent, weather and background. Picking one at random avoids defaulting to the same three coastal states.
- License plate and sports games. Any game that needs a state called out at random, from "spot the plate" on a long drive to a college-football bracket.

Beyond states
If you want a city rather than a state, the Random City Generator picks from cities worldwide, and the Random Capital City Generator covers national capitals. For a random point on the globe, use the Random Location Generator, and for a whole country at a time, the Random Country Generator. You can browse all country, city and place generators in one place.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the random state generator include Washington, D.C. or Puerto Rico?
No. It draws only from the 50 states. The District of Columbia and the territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands) are not in the list.
- Can I pick several states at once, or avoid repeats?
Not on this page. Each press picks one state independently, so the same state can come up twice in a row. To work through all 50 without repeats, use the table on this page and cross them off.
- What does the abbreviation in parentheses mean?
It's the two-letter USPS postal code for the state, the same one used on mailing addresses: TX for Texas, ME for Maine, and so on. A few are easy to mix up, such as MI (Michigan) versus MN (Minnesota) versus MS (Mississippi).
- Is the flag image accurate?
Each flag is a vector image of the state's current official flag. Note that Utah, Minnesota, Mississippi and Illinois have all adopted or redesigned their flags in the last few years, so an older textbook may show a different version.
- Why isn't the capital the largest city?
In most states it isn't. Capitals were often chosen in the 1800s for central location or political compromise, before the big cities grew. Only about a third of state capitals are also the state's most populous city, among them Phoenix, Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Honolulu, Indianapolis, Nashville, Salt Lake City and Oklahoma City.
