Saiyan Name Generator
Get one to ten Saiyan names from a list of 168 vegetable puns that follow Dragon Ball's own naming rule. The Saiyan Name Generator gives you between one and ten names from a list of 168, every one of them a bent or scrambled vegetable word, because that is how Akira Toriyama named the Saiyan race. Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is a Chinese cabbage, Broly is broccoli, Cabba is cabbage, Caulifla is cauliflower, Kale is kale. If your original character is going to sit next to those names without looking out of place, it needs to be a vegetable too. That is the only rule this tool follows.
What you get
Type a number from 1 to 10 and press the button. Each result is a single name on its own card, with no surname, title or gender label, which matches the source material: Saiyans go by one name. The list is shuffled on every press and the first few entries are taken, so you never get the same name twice in one batch. The default is three names, which is enough to compare without scrolling.
There are no filters. The list is not split into male and female names, and there is no "Super Saiyan form" or "power level" output. If you need a full Dragon Ball character rather than just a Saiyan name, the Dragon Ball Character Generator picks an existing character from the series instead.
How the names are built
Toriyama's method was to take a vegetable, usually its Japanese or English name, and mangle it until it sounded like a name rather than a grocery item. The 168 names here were built the same way, in three broad styles you will recognize once you see them:
- Truncation. Chop the word: Zucchi (zucchini), Cucumb (cucumber), Aubergi (aubergine), Aspara (asparagus), Pumpki (pumpkin), Scallio (scallion).
- Respelling. Keep the sound, change the letters: Jinjer (ginger), Korn (corn), Kayle (kale), Garlik (garlic), Lettus (lettuce), Fannel (fennel), Kassava (cassava).
- Reversal or scramble. Flip or shuffle the letters: Otamot (tomato), Noino (onion), Reppep (pepper), Naeb (bean), Totoma (tomato again, scrambled differently), Ionon (onion).
A few canon or near-canon names are in the list too, such as Bardock (burdock) and Cabba, so a result may occasionally be a name from the show. Most are original. The vegetables covered run well past the ones the series has used: daikon, mizuna, komatsuna, jicama, chayote, galangal, nopal, taro, yam, sunchoke and rutabaga all appear in some form, which is useful if you want a name that doesn't collide with an existing character.
Male and female Saiyan names
People search for "female Saiyan name generator" and "male Saiyan name generator" a lot, and it is worth saying plainly that Dragon Ball never gendered the pun. Gine (Goku's mother) is a spring onion, Fasha is a parsley variant, Caulifla and Kale are cauliflower and kale, and none of those sound more feminine than Vegeta or Nappa sound masculine. So any name from this generator works for either. If you want a name to lean one way, the usual trick is the ending: names that end in a vowel or a soft sound (Cabba, Chaya, Radichio, Carole) tend to read as female to English speakers, and hard consonant endings (Bardock, Korn, Gherk, Leeck) read as male. Generate ten and pick by ear.
Ways people use it
- Original characters for fan fiction. A Saiyan survivor, a Universe 6 recruit or an ancestor of Bardock all need a name that passes the vegetable test.
- Xenoverse, Sparking Zero and FighterZ custom characters. Character creators in the games ask for a name; "Rugool" fits the roster better than a gamertag.
- Tabletop campaigns. Dragon Ball-flavored RPG sessions need a table's worth of named NPCs quickly.
- Usernames and handles. A single short pun name is easy to remember and usually still available on most platforms.
If you are naming characters from other fandoms, the Harry Potter Name Generator, the Clone Trooper Name Generator and the MLP Name Generator follow the same one-click pattern. You can browse all name generators from the category page.
Frequently asked questions
- Are these official Saiyan names from Dragon Ball?
A handful, such as Bardock and Cabba, are names that appear in the series. The vast majority of the 168 names are original vegetable puns written in the same style, so they are safe to use for an original character without stepping on a canon one.
- Can I generate a female Saiyan name?
Every name in the list is unisex, exactly as in the show, where Gine, Fasha, Caulifla and Kale are all vegetable puns with no feminine marker. Generate a batch and choose by sound; vowel endings like Cabba or Chaya tend to read as female.
- Why are all Saiyan names vegetables?
Akira Toriyama gave each Dragon Ball race a naming theme. Saiyans are vegetables (Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish), Frieza's family is cold-related, Bulma's family is underwear, and the Namekians are slugs and snails. This tool sticks to the vegetable theme only.
- How many names can I get at once?
From 1 to 10 per press. Names within one batch never repeat. Press again for a new batch drawn from the same 168 names.
- What is the Saiyan naming pattern if I want to make my own?
Pick a vegetable, then either cut it short (Zucchi from zucchini), respell it (Korn from corn) or reverse it (Otamot from tomato). Two syllables ending in a hard consonant sounds most like the main cast.
