School Name Generator
Get one to ten random school, academy, college and university names from a list of 683, for stories, games and worldbuilding.Enter how many names you want (1 to 10) and press Generate School Name. The tool draws from a list of 683 school names covering the whole range of institutions: elementary schools, high schools, preparatory academies, learning centers, community colleges, technical colleges and universities. It is built for people who need a believable school name for something made up: a novel, a screenplay, a tabletop campaign, a game map, a mock-up or a sample dataset.
What kind of names come out
Most entries follow the patterns real American schools use. A place or nature word plus an institution word: Maple Grove Preparatory, Pinehurst Preparatory, Lakeshore Preparatory, Brookside Academy, Strawberry Ridge Elementary, Greendale Community High School, Shore Country Elementary School, Woodland Hills Institute. A smaller group uses the aspirational style favored by private academies and tutoring centers: Bright Sparks Institute, Spires of Wisdom, Insightful Minds Institute, Scholars' Haven, Harmony Heights.
Mixed in are names that are clearly fictional or played for laughs: Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, The Avatar School, Camelot Academy, Raven's Roost High School, Microwave University, Skool of Dance, Boring Community College, The Academy of De-Extinction. There is no filter to separate the serious from the silly, and no filter by school level, so ask for 10 at a time and pick what fits. Each result appears on its own card; there is no mascot, motto or location attached.
Where the names get used
- Fiction. A protagonist's high school or the college a character dropped out of needs a name that sounds real without belonging to a real place. Generic geographic names like Elmwood Learning Center are safest, because many real schools share similar names and none has a claim on it.
- Games and worldbuilding. Life sims, visual novels, superhero settings and campaign towns all need schools. The oddball names suit comedic settings; the prep-school names suit drama.
- Test data and mock-ups. Forms, database seeds and design comps that need an "institution" field filled with plausible values rather than "Test School 1".
- Naming a real project. Tutoring businesses, homeschool co-ops and coding bootcamps sometimes use the list as a brainstorm. Check the name is not already registered in your state and that the domain is free before printing anything.
How real school names are built
Public schools in the US are usually named after their location (Lakeside, Bayport), a person (a president, a local figure, a donor) or a compass direction plus the district name (North Valley High). Private schools lean on words that signal tradition and selectivity: Academy, Preparatory, Hall, Country Day, Institute. Religious schools add a saint or a virtue. Universities are typically "[Place] University", "University of [Place]" or "[Founder] College". If you are writing your own name rather than picking one from the list, combining a local landmark with one of those institution words is the fastest way to something that sounds established.
For other institution and organization names, the Newspaper Name Generator and Farm Name Generator follow the same idea for a town's other landmarks, and the Random Book Title Generator helps when your fictional school needs a fictional library. Browse all name generators for the full set.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I generate only high school names or only college names?
No. The list mixes elementary schools, high schools, academies, colleges and universities, and there is no type filter. Generate 10 at a time and pick the ones with the right institution word.
- Are these real schools?
The names are invented, but many follow common naming patterns, so some may coincide with real schools somewhere. If you are naming a real business or want to avoid a clash in fiction, search the name before using it.
- How many names can I get at once?
Between 1 and 10 per click, from a pool of 683. Click again for a new set; names can repeat between clicks.
