Sentence Shortener
Paste a sentence or short passage (up to 2,500 characters) and get a tighter version that keeps the meaning, with copy and download buttons. The Sentence Shortener takes a sentence or a short passage, up to 2,500 characters, and rewrites it in fewer words while keeping the point. Paste your text, press the button, and the shorter version streams onto the page word by word, usually within a few seconds. It is for anyone who has written something that is technically correct but too long: an email that buries the ask, a slide bullet that wraps to three lines, a tweet that will not fit, an abstract that is over the limit.
How to use it
There is one text box and one button. The counter under the box shows how many of the 2,500 characters you have used; anything beyond that is cut off as you type. Press Shorten Sentence and the tool sends your text to our rewriting model, which is asked to keep the meaning and drop the padding. The result appears under the heading "Shortened Sentence." If nothing comes back within 30 seconds, you get an error message and can try again.
Once you have a result, three small controls sit under it: a copy button that puts the text on your clipboard, a download button that saves it as a .txt file, and share buttons for WhatsApp, X and Facebook.
What the shortener changes, and what it keeps
A good shortening is not the same as a summary. A summary can leave out whole ideas; a shortener should keep every idea and lose only the words that were not carrying weight. In practice that means the model does things like:
- Cutting hedges and throat-clearing: "I just wanted to reach out to see if" becomes "Could you".
- Replacing phrases with single words: "in the event that" becomes "if", "at this point in time" becomes "now".
- Turning passive constructions active: "the report was reviewed by the team" becomes "the team reviewed the report".
- Dropping repeated nouns once the reference is clear.
- Merging two short sentences that say one thing.
It should not change facts, numbers, names or the tone of a request. Read the output before you send it anyway. The model is good at this but not infallible, and a sentence with a legal or contractual meaning deserves a human read.

Where it fits
- Word-limited writing. Application forms, grant abstracts and exam answers with a hard cap. Paste the paragraph that is over, shorten, and paste it back.
- Email openers. The first sentence of a request is usually the one with the most filler. Shorten just that sentence and leave the rest.
- Slide decks and captions. Bullets that wrap to a second line lose their punch. Run each one through.
- Social posts. Character limits on X and LinkedIn previews. Shorten first, then trim by hand if you are still over.
- Plain-language rewrites. Long sentences are hard for non-native readers and screen readers alike. Shorter sentences help both.
The tools around it cover the other direction and the neighboring jobs. The Summary Generator condenses a whole article rather than a sentence. The AI Sentence Generator writes a sentence from a topic when you have nothing on the page yet, and the Conclusion Generator and AI Introduction Generator handle the two paragraphs most people find hardest. If you only need filler text for a layout, the Random Sentence Generator is quicker. All of these sit under all writing & AI tools.
Frequently asked questions
- How much text can I shorten at once?
Up to 2,500 characters, roughly 400 words. The counter under the box shows where you are, and anything past the limit is trimmed as you type. For longer pieces, shorten a paragraph at a time.
- Will it change the meaning of my sentence?
It is instructed not to. The model removes filler words, converts passive phrasing to active and merges redundant clauses, but keeps facts, names and numbers. Check the result before using it in anything formal.
- Is this the same as a summarizer?
No. A summarizer drops ideas to get a shorter overview; the shortener keeps every idea and cuts only words. For a full-article overview use the Summary Generator.
- Can I set a target length?
Not currently. The tool asks the model for the shortest version that preserves meaning, with a small minimum so a sentence is never reduced to a fragment. Run it again if you want a different take.
- Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no usage cap on the page. The text you paste is sent to our API to be rewritten and is not stored for anything else.
