Tattoo Idea Generator

The Tattoo Idea Generator shows you one real tattoo photo at a time. Pick a gender and a body placement, press Generate, and a card appears with the photo, the gender it was shot on and where on the body it sits. Leave both filters on Random and it picks from the whole set of 200 photos. It's built for people who know roughly where they want ink but haven't settled on a look, and for anyone who wants to browse placements without scrolling through thousands of near-identical Pinterest pins.

What you can filter

There are two dropdowns and nothing else. The gender filter has three settings: Random, Male and Female. The placement filter has six: Random plus the five placements in the dataset, which are ankle, back, behind ear, shoulder and side body. The two filters combine, so "Female + Behind Ear" narrows the pool to the 20 photos that match both. Every press returns a single tattoo; there is no count setting, so if you want a few options, press the button a few times.

What is in the photo set

The collection holds 200 tattoo photographs, split evenly: 100 male and 100 female, and 40 per placement (20 male, 20 female for each of the five spots). They are photos of finished tattoos on skin rather than flash sheets or line drawings, so you can see how a design actually wraps around an ankle bone or sits along the ribs. The cards show the photo, gender and placement only; there is no artist credit, style tag or description attached to each image, which is why the page doesn't let you search by style such as "geometric" or "watercolor".

Ways to use it

• Placement scouting. If you have decided on a behind-the-ear piece but have no idea how large those usually run, set the placement filter and hit Generate ten or fifteen times. You will get a fast sense of the scale that works there.
• Reference for a consultation. Screenshot two or three results you like and take them to your artist. Real photos of healed work are more useful to an artist than a drawing, because they show how lines hold up on that part of the body.
• Deciding between spots. Not sure whether a small piece belongs on the ankle or the shoulder? Compare a few results from each placement side by side.
• Drawing prompts. Tattoo artists and illustrators use random references as warm-up prompts: pull a photo, then redraw it in your own style. The Random Tattoo Generator works the same way and is another source of prompts.

A note on the five placements

The placements in the set were chosen because they behave very differently under the needle, and the photos make that visible.

• Ankle – thin skin over bone, so most pieces here are small and linework-heavy. Expect more discomfort than on fleshier areas.
• Behind ear – one of the smallest canvases on the body; the photos are mostly single symbols, tiny florals and short script. Easy to hide with hair, hard to hide with a short cut.
• Shoulder – a broad, relatively flat area that takes larger illustrative pieces well. The photos here range from small caps to work that continues down the upper arm.
• Back – the largest canvas, and the placement where you will see full compositions rather than single motifs. Also the placement you can't see yourself without a mirror.
• Side body – ribs and flank, popular for long vertical designs such as script, vines and feathers. Widely reported as one of the more painful spots.

If the placement you want isn't listed (forearm, thigh, hand, sternum), this tool can't help yet; the set only covers the five above.
