Tumblr Username Generator

The Tumblr Username Generator takes a name or a word you like, a "vibe" and an optional length range, and returns up to 20 username ideas built around it. Each result has a copy button and a Tumblr icon that opens tumblr.com/that-name in a new tab so you can see whether the blog URL is taken. It is meant for people setting up a main blog, a sideblog for a fandom or an aesthetic blog and who have stared at the empty URL box long enough.

The three steps

1. Who are you. Type a name, nickname, fandom, hobby or any word you want the username to be built around. This is the only required field; the other tabs stay locked until it is filled.
2. Username vibe. Choose one style: All styles, Professional, Nature-inspired, Artistic, Fantasy, Catchy, Sporty, Cute, Tech-inspired, Sci-fi, Funny or Gamer. "All styles" mixes them; a specific vibe narrows the wordplay and the kind of words added to your seed.
3. Optional settings. A favorite number the generator can work into some results, and a length slider from 1 to 32 characters. 32 is Tumblr's own maximum for a blog URL, so anything the tool produces fits.

Press Generate and the ideas are created by our username API, which means it needs a connection and takes a second or two. Results differ every time, even with the same inputs, so generating twice with the same settings gives you a second batch.

Checking if a Tumblr blog name is free

Tumblr does not have a public availability check, but a blog URL is public by design. Clicking the Tumblr icon on a result opens tumblr.com/username. If a blog loads, the name is taken. If you get Tumblr's "There's nothing here" page, the name is usually available, though names from deleted or terminated blogs are sometimes held back, and you will only know for sure when you type it into the sign-up or blog settings screen. Check your two or three favorites this way rather than all twenty.

Tumblr's rules for blog names

The rules are short and the generator sticks to them: letters, numbers and hyphens only, no spaces or other punctuation, 32 characters at most. Tumblr treats names as case-insensitive, so MidnightArchive and midnightarchive are the same blog. You can rename a primary blog later from Settings, but the old URL is released immediately and anyone can grab it, so reblogs and links from other sites will break. Sideblogs follow the same rules and can be renamed the same way. Your display name (the title shown at the top of the blog) has none of these limits; it can have spaces, emoji and up to 64 characters, and it is separate from the URL.

What makes a Tumblr username work

Tumblr names tend to be lower-case, wordy and specific to a mood or a fandom rather than a person's full name: think two nouns and a hyphen, a lyric fragment, or a fandom word plus an adjective. Long names are normal here in a way they are not on other platforms. A few practical points: avoid hyphens at the very start or end, avoid strings of digits unless they mean something to you (a birth year in a username also tells strangers your age), and say the name out loud before you keep it. If you plan to use the same handle elsewhere, try the shorter results first, because X/Twitter caps names at 15 characters and Snapchat at 15 as well.
