Unisex Name Generator

Ask for 1 to 10 names and get random gender-neutral first names from a list of 355, mixing modern picks like River with classics like Evelyn.

The Unisex Name Generator draws first names from a list of 355 that are used for people of any gender. Set how many you want, from 1 to 10, press Generate Unisex Name, and each name shows on its own card. The list mixes the names most people think of first (Jordan, Taylor, Avery, Quinn, Riley) with nature and word names (River, Sage, Rain, Cypress, Salem) and older names that have been used for both boys and girls for a century or more (Evelyn, Marion, Hilary, Noel, Francis). It suits parents looking for a gender neutral name, writers naming a character whose gender should not be obvious, and anyone who wants a nonbinary name or a neutral username that does not read as a joke.

How it works

There is one setting: the number of names. The tool shuffles the whole list and returns the first however many you asked for, so a single batch never repeats a name. There are no filters for origin, length or starting letter; if you want more variety, run it a few times. Names are first names only. For a full name, pair one with the Random Last Name Generator.

Where unisex names come from

Almost every name on the list got to be gender neutral by one of a few routes, and knowing which one helps you pick a name with the feel you want.

How it became unisexExamples from the listFeel
Surnames used as first namesTaylor, Parker, Cameron, Hayden, Blair, Harlan, MarlowModern, slightly preppy; the biggest group of popular unisex names in the US
Short forms that work for several full namesSam, Pat, Toni, Jamie, AlexCasual and friendly; good for usernames
Nature and word namesRiver, Sage, Rain, Sun, Cypress, RowanEarthy, popular with parents since the 2010s
Names that crossed over during the 20th centuryEvelyn, Shirley, Beverly, Marion, Hilary, CarrollVintage; most were boys' names first and are now mostly given to girls
Traditional names with a long shared historyFrancis, Noel, Jocelyn, Sidney, Jude, DylanClassic; often spelled differently by gender (Francis/Frances, Sidney/Sydney)
Newer coinages and respellingsKai, Kodie, Mykah, Tatum, AxisContemporary; less likely to be shared with a classmate

A name does not have to be split 50/50 to count. Social Security naming data shows that names like Avery and Riley are given to both sexes in large numbers every year, while others such as Evelyn have swung almost entirely to one side. If a truly even split matters to you, Charlie, Casey, Emerson and Finley are among the closest in current US data.

Uses beyond baby names

  • Fiction and screenwriting. A gender-neutral name lets you delay revealing a character's gender, or fits a character who is nonbinary.
  • Placeholder users in software. Test data that avoids gendered assumptions reads better in screenshots and avoids awkward pronoun defaults.
  • Online handles. A short unisex name plus a number or a surname is a plain, credible username. If you want something deliberately silly instead, the Goofy Ahh Names Generator and the Stupid Name Generator go the other way.
  • Pen names and stage names. Rave and DJ names often start with a one-word neutral name; the Rave Name Generator covers that style specifically.

If you decide you want a gendered name after all, the site has a Random Boy Name Generator, along with regional lists such as the German Name Generator. You can browse all name generators in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a gender neutral or non-binary name generator?

Yes. Unisex, gender neutral, androgynous and nonbinary name generators all describe the same idea: first names that are not tied to one gender. This list is built for that purpose.

How many unisex names are in the list?

355 first names. You can generate up to 10 per click, and a batch never contains the same name twice.

Can I filter by origin, meaning or first letter?

No. The tool has a single setting, the number of names. Generate a few batches and pick the ones that fit.

Does it include last names?

No, first names only. Combine a result with the Random Last Name Generator if you need a full name.
