Castle Name Generator
Choose a style (evil, fairytale, fantasy, magical, medieval or space) and how many you want, and get castle, keep and fortress names from a list of 668.The Castle Name Generator gives you between one and ten names for castles, keeps, fortresses, citadels, towers and palaces, filtered by the mood you're after. Pick Evil and you get Bloodthorn Citadel and Vileblood Keep; pick Space and you get Nebula Palace and Ophiuchus Keep; leave it on Random and the whole list of 668 is fair game. It's built for fantasy writers, dungeon masters, Minecraft and Skyrim builders, and anyone with a stronghold on a map that still says "castle 2".
Settings
- Number of names – 1 to 10 per click, default 5.
- Category – Random, Evil, Fairytale, Fantasy, Magical, Medieval or Space. The filter is exact: choosing Medieval only draws from the 71 medieval names, never from the others.
Press the button and the matching names are shuffled and shown on cards. Press again for a new set; no name repeats within one batch.
What's in each category
The list has 668 names split unevenly across the six styles, so the smaller categories will start to repeat across batches sooner:
- Fantasy (175) – the broadest set, mixing invented single words with descriptive names: Senara, Prismfall Castle, Twilight Grove Castle, Worthwood Castle, Scorpio Tower.
- Magical (161) – arcane and elven-sounding: Arcanist's Palace, Ealynn, Caceriadan, Fabled Stronghold, Darrumburgh Palace.
- Evil (126) – the villain's seat. Heavy on Shadow, Blood, Stygian, Infernal and Abyssal: The Malevolent Citadel, Netherrealm Keep, Zombiemire Castle, Doomfire Lair, Dreadwatch Citadel.
- Space (85) – constellations and cosmic terms bolted onto castle words: Fornax Fortress, Pegasus Roost, Interstellar Palace, Phoenix Castle.
- Medieval (71) – plausible historical names in the English and Norman style: Angarth Keep, Kentillie Castle, Blaise Fortress, Falkerstone Palace, Ulentor Keep.
- Fairytale (50) – this one is different: it's mostly real castles that look like they belong in a storybook. Neuschwanstein, Château de Chillon, Alcázar of Segovia, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Castel Sant'Angelo. Useful if you want a name with a real place behind it, less useful if you need something nobody has heard of.
Across the whole list, "Castle" is the most common last word (125), then Keep (80), Fortress (76), Citadel (71), Tower, Palace, Stronghold, Roost, Lair, Hold and Fort. Swapping that final word is the easiest way to tune a result: a Keep is smaller and more military than a Palace; a Citadel is a fortress that anchors a city; a Lair is where the dragon is.
How real castle names work
Most real castles are named one of four ways, and matching the pattern makes an invented name feel settled in its world:
- After the place – Edinburgh Castle, Windsor Castle, Château de Chillon. Name the town or river first, then the castle takes its name. In a fantasy setting, invent the village and the castle names itself.
- After the founder or dynasty – Hohenzollern, Castel Sant'Angelo (originally Hadrian's mausoleum), the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs. A family name plus "Hold" or "Keep" reads as old money.
- Descriptive – Neuschwanstein means "new swan stone"; Hohensalzburg is "high Salzburg"; Castle Black in Game of Thrones. Color, height and material words do the work here, which is the pattern most of the Evil and Fantasy lists use.
- Function or feature – the Tower of London, Fort William, Krak des Chevaliers ("fortress of the knights"). Good for military strongholds and border forts.
Once the castle has a name, the surrounding pieces usually need one too. The Random Kingdom Name Generator covers the realm it rules, the Tavern Name Generator handles the inn outside the gates, the Street Names Generator fills in the town, and the Civilization Name Generator names the people who built it. If the fortress stands on a coast, the Island Name Generator can name the rock it sits on. The full set is under all name generators.
Frequently asked questions
- How many castle names does the generator have?
668, split into Fantasy (175), Magical (161), Evil (126), Space (85), Medieval (71) and Fairytale (50). You can draw up to 10 at a time from one category or from the whole list.
- Can I get palace or fortress names specifically?
There's no filter by building type, only by style. About 38 names end in Palace and 76 in Fortress, spread across the categories, so pick a style and generate a few batches. You can also swap the last word of any result.
- Are the fairytale castle names real places?
Mostly, yes. The Fairytale category is made up of real castles with a storybook look, such as Neuschwanstein and Château de Chillon. The other five categories are invented names.
- Can I use these names in a published book or game?
The invented names are free to use. The Fairytale entries are real castles, so treat them as place names rather than something you own. As with any name, a quick search before you commit avoids clashing with an existing series.
