What is in the list
The given names are the part that carries the history. They are Old Norse and later Scandinavian names, many in their Anglicized spellings: Thorold, Halvard, Yngvar, Igor, Tor, Ranald, Gilby for men; Sigrid, Gerda, Brynda, Astrid-style names, Livvy, Torrey for women. The meanings are the traditional ones: thunder, sword, guardian of the rock, beautiful victory, follower of Thor, of Ing's army. There are 274 distinct given names across the two pools.
The surname on each card is picked separately from a pool of about 150 Nordic-flavored surnames such as Swensen, Halvorsen, Hamar, Skeet and Reyner. Not all of them are strictly Norse; a few (Turpin, Ballard, Becker) are Anglo-French or German family names that sit alongside the rest, and a handful of given names like Thor, Odin and Liv appear in the surname slot too. The meaning shown always belongs to the given name, never the surname. If you want a historically accurate second name, the section below explains how the Norse actually did it.

How Norse names were really formed
Vikings did not have fixed family surnames. A person had a given name and then a patronymic: the father's name plus -son for a son or -dóttir for a daughter. Leif Erikson is Leif, son of Erik; his sister would be Freydís Eiríksdóttir. Iceland still names people this way. So if you want a Norse last name for a character, take any male given name from this generator and add the suffix: Halvard's son is Halvardsson, his daughter Halvardsdóttir.
On top of that, most people in the sagas carried a byname (kenningarnafn) describing appearance, temperament or deeds: Harald Fairhair, Erik the Red, Ivar the Boneless, Ragnar Lodbrok (“hairy breeches”). Bynames were earned, not chosen, and were often unflattering. For a kingdom or hall name, the Norse simply used the place: Hordaland, Vestfold, Uppsala. A name like “Jarl Halvard of Vestfold, called the Rock” is closer to how a real Norse name would have sounded than any surname this or any generator produces.
The god names in the meanings are worth noticing too. Names built on Thor (Thorold, Torrey, Tor), Ing/Yngvi (Yngvar) and Odin (the -in ending in some names) were common precisely because parents wanted the god's protection for the child.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I generate only female Norse names?
Yes. Set Gender to Female and every result comes from the 269 female entries. Male gives the 299 male ones; Random mixes both.
- Does the generator make Norse last names?
Each name comes with a surname from a pool of about 150, but historically the Norse used patronymics rather than surnames. Add -son or -dóttir to any male given name from the results for an accurate one, e.g. Halvardsson.
- Are these Old Norse spellings?
Mostly Anglicized. You will see Thorold and Halvard rather than Þórvaldr and Hallvarðr. The meanings given are the traditional ones for the Old Norse root.
- Can I use it for kingdom or clan names?
Not directly; it produces personal names only. Norse kingdoms were named after their region (Vestfold, Hordaland), so pair a generated jarl name with a real or invented place name.
