Random Smash Character Generator

Press Generate for one random fighter from the full Smash Ultimate roster, DLC and Echo Fighters included, with its render.

Press Generate and you get one fighter from the full Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, shown as a name and a character render. The list has 86 entries: every base-game fighter, all seven Echo Fighters, Piranha Plant, and the eleven Fighters Pass characters through Sora. If you play "random" in-game you get the same thing, but this smash randomizer works before you boot the console, on a phone at a tournament table, or when you want to lock in a pick for a challenge run and screenshot it.

What the roster covers

There are no options to set, so it helps to know exactly what can come up. The 86 entries break down like this:

  • The 64 base-roster fighters from Mario (01) through Incineroar, not counting the Miis, including Pokémon Trainer as a single entry rather than Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard separately.
  • All seven Echo Fighters: Dark Samus, Daisy, Lucina, Chrom, Dark Pit, Ken and Richter, each as their own pick.
  • Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter and Mii Gunner as three separate entries (the Brawler is listed as "Mii Fighter").
  • All DLC: Piranha Plant, then Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry and Byleth from Fighters Pass Vol. 1, and Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pyra & Mythra, Kazuya and Sora from Vol. 2.

Pyra and Mythra count as one entry, the way they share a slot in-game. Every fighter has the same 1-in-86 chance on each press, and there is no memory between presses, so the same character can come up twice in a row.

Ways to use a random Smash pick

  • Random-select tournaments. Each player presses once per set and plays what they get. Because DLC is in the pool, agree beforehand on what to do when someone lands a fighter the host console doesn't own; the usual rule is re-roll.
  • Learning the cast. Roll a fighter, play ten matches with it, roll again. It is the fastest way to build matchup knowledge for the characters you never pick voluntarily.
  • Classic Mode and World of Light runs. Pick a random character for each 9.9 intensity attempt, or for each new save file.
  • Streams and challenge videos. Viewers can see the roll happen on screen instead of taking your word for it.
  • Settling who plays whom. Two rolls, one match. No arguing over mains.

Frequently asked questions

Does the random Smash character generator include DLC?

Yes. All 12 DLC fighters are in the pool: Piranha Plant plus both Fighters Passes, ending with Sora. There is no toggle to exclude them, so re-roll if you land a fighter you don't own.

Are Echo Fighters separate picks?

Yes. Dark Samus, Daisy, Lucina, Chrom, Dark Pit, Ken and Richter each have their own entry, so Marth and Lucina are two different results.

Can I pick more than one fighter at a time?

Not in one press. Press Generate once per player, or once per round of a random-select bracket. Each press is independent, so repeats are possible.

Does it work for Melee or Smash 4?

The list is the Ultimate roster. Since Ultimate contains every fighter from earlier games, you can use it for Melee or Smash 4 by re-rolling any character that isn't in your game.
